{"id":394088,"date":"2020-04-30T11:01:31","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T09:01:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=394088"},"modified":"2020-04-30T11:01:31","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T09:01:31","slug":"competition-commission-reaches-agreement-with-mtn-over-data-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/394088\/competition-commission-reaches-agreement-with-mtn-over-data-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Competition Commission reaches agreement with MTN over data prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Competition Commission has reached an agreement with MTN regarding the reduction of its data prices.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement includes the reduction of the pricing of 30-day prepaid bundles of up to 1GB of data \u2013 which will now cost R99.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agreement, these new prices must be implemented as of 1 May, although MTN already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/347833-mtn-cuts-data-prices-and-gives-free-daily-ayoba-data-to-subscribers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>implemented<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0these changes earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement follows the publication of the final report of the Data Services Market Inquiry in December last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission implemented the inquiry to investigate factors or features of the market that have historically led to what it labels as \u201chigh prices for data services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits of the agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of the new agreement, MTN will also offer all customers a daily free data bundle to use in Ayoba, a free messaging app for Android devices.
