{"id":394614,"date":"2020-05-02T08:36:49","date_gmt":"2020-05-02T06:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=394614"},"modified":"2020-05-02T09:47:53","modified_gmt":"2020-05-02T07:47:53","slug":"government-wants-to-create-a-new-national-airline-to-takeover-from-saa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/394614\/government-wants-to-create-a-new-national-airline-to-takeover-from-saa\/","title":{"rendered":"Government wants to create a new national airline to take over from SAA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa is seeking to create a new thriving national airline out of the ashes of its current state-owned carrier, which is technically insolvent and on the brink of being placed in liquidation by administrators.<\/p>\n<p>An ideal replacement for South African Airways would have both public and private owners, maintain the country\u2019s trade connections and make a profit, the Department of Public Enterprises said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The plan has the backing of SAA\u2019s near 5,000-strong workforce, the ministry said, without mentioning the business-rescue team that has been running the airline since December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old SAA is dead, there is no doubt about that,\u201d Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan said by phone from Pretoria, the capital. \u201cBut what will take its place may be some or all of the old SAA and maybe some other airlines too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SAA\u2019s administrators, led by Les Matuson and Siviwe Dongwana, were working on a recovery plan for the perennially loss-making carrier before the Covid-19 crisis forced the grounding of all aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>They began the process of liquidating the airline last month after the government refused to provide a bailout package, and have asked all employees to agree to severance packages.<\/p>\n<p>That offer remains on the table, a spokeswoman for the administrators said when asked to comment on the DPE\u2019s statement. Labour groups have yet to sign <span id=\"124a4f06-8bd6-11ea-8d06-308d99724420\">up to<\/span>\u00a0any deal.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s whole aviation industry has been plunged into crisis by the coronavirus pandemic.
