{"id":394830,"date":"2020-05-04T12:24:34","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T10:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=394830"},"modified":"2020-05-04T12:24:34","modified_gmt":"2020-05-04T10:24:34","slug":"increase-in-grocery-prices-during-south-africas-lockdown-this-is-what-you-are-paying-more-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/394830\/increase-in-grocery-prices-during-south-africas-lockdown-this-is-what-you-are-paying-more-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Increase in grocery prices during South Africa\u2019s lockdown \u2013 this is what you are paying more for"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stats SA has published new data highlighting the price changes for essential goods during South Africa&#8217;s coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>The statistics body is actively tracking prices during South Africa&#8217;s lockdown, with prices increasing by 0.2% since weekly data was first collected at the beginning of the lockdown in the week ending 2 April.<\/p>\n<p>Food and non-alcoholic beverage (NAB) prices decreased by 0.2% in each of the last two weeks, but a cumulative increase of 0.2% was observed over the entire period.<\/p>\n<p>The largest cumulative price increases were recorded in milk eggs and cheese (2.6%) as well as oils and fats (2.4%).<\/p>\n<p>By comparison vegetable, fruit, and fish products decreased by 4.6%, 3.7% and 1.7% respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The below graphic shows the latest weekly price increases as well as the price increases since the lockdown began.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-394844 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-968x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-968x1024.jpg 968w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-768x812.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-1453x1536.jpg 1453w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-1937x2048.jpg 1937w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Stats-SA-1200x1269.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stats SA said that five of the nine food categories decreased in the most recent week, including bread and cereals (-0.2%), meat (-0.5%) and vegetables (-1.8%).<\/p>\n<p>Other notable increase and decreases include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fruit and other foods increased by 6.5% and 1.7% respectively;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Bread and cereal products decreased by 0.2% in the week ending 23 April;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Rice prices dropped by 2.8%, sweet biscuits by 2.6% and frozen pastry products by 11.4%;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>An 8.2% decrease in prices for cheddar cheese contributed to a weekly decrease in the milk, eggs and cheese index;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Margarine spread prices dropped by 5.6% and peanut butter dropped by 3.8%, whereas cooking oil increased by 3.5%, which together resulted in a 0.1% weekly increase in oils and fats;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hot and cold beverage prices fell in the week ending 23 April.
