{"id":395929,"date":"2020-05-07T11:45:20","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T09:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=395929"},"modified":"2020-05-07T11:45:20","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T09:45:20","slug":"south-africa-plans-to-introduce-a-new-high-speed-train-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/395929\/south-africa-plans-to-introduce-a-new-high-speed-train-system\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa plans to introduce a new high-speed train system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Transport wants to introduce a new High-Speed Rail (HSR) network in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Presenting in a parliamentary portfolio committee on Wednesday (6 May) Department of Transport director-general, Alec Moemi, said that a framework for the project has already been developed and implemented.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the project will not be solely funded by the government but will be financed through investor funding as well as private sector participation.<\/p>\n<p>This would also help end the monopolies that Prasa and Transnet have in the rail sector, he said.<\/p>\n<p>While Moemi did not specify where the rail system will be introduced, an attached parliamentary presentation shows that the HSR has been set a five-year development target, meaning it will likely only be introduced by 2025 at the earliest.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the department&#8217;s presentation below (high speed train information at 00:16:45).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MNu6_JlRmVs?start=1005\" width=\"640\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bullet train<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his June 2019 state of the nation address, President Cyril Ramaphosa <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/324961\/ramaphosa-dreams-of-skyscrapers-and-bullet-trains-but-heres-what-happened-to-the-last-r84-billion-smart-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outlined<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>his vision for a new state-of-the-art South African smart city and the introduction of bullet trains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI dream of a South Africa where the first entirely new city built in the democratic era rises, with skyscrapers, schools, universities, hospitals and factories,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a dream we can all share and participate in building.
