{"id":396261,"date":"2020-05-08T11:37:19","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T09:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=396261"},"modified":"2020-05-08T11:37:46","modified_gmt":"2020-05-08T09:37:46","slug":"joburg-faces-flood-of-migrant-workers-looking-for-jobs-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/396261\/joburg-faces-flood-of-migrant-workers-looking-for-jobs-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Joburg faces flood of migrant workers looking for jobs: mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost one million people in Johannesburg, South Africa\u2019s commercial hub, are in need of food aid due to movement restrictions imposed to curb the coronavirus pandemic, according to its mayor.<\/p>\n<p>While South Africa has less than 9,000 infections, it\u2019s still one of the highest numbers on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>The government imposed a lockdown late March that shuttered schools and businesses and only allowed essential workers out of their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Today, about 300,000 households in Johannesburg require food assistance, mayor Geoff Makhubo said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs more and more people get unemployed, the incidences of poverty and food insecurity start to increase,\u201d Makhubo said by phone. \u201cSocial distress is something that is real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before the measures, 45% of the city\u2019s 5.5 million inhabitants lived in poverty and 20% were food insecure, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Johannesburg is planning food support for vulnerable households and will use the national social security agency\u2019s data alongside its own as it seeks to find those that aren\u2019t in the welfare system, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dollar millionaires<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>National short-term relief measures, including an additional R50 billion in welfare grants for the poor and unemployed, are assisting the city\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Inequality is rife in Johannesburg, which is home to thousands of undocumented migrants as well as 19,000 dollar millionaires who make up almost half of the country\u2019s high-income individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executives and top lawyers make as much as R20 million ($1.1 million) a year while the official minimum wage is just over R20 ($1.08) an hour.<\/p>\n<p>The lockdown, even though it was eased slightly on 1 May, is likely to exacerbate that inequality.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s biggest business grouping, Business for South Africa, earlier this week urged the government to accelerate the restart of the economy to minimize hardship, hunger and desperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s going to be unemployment, here in Johannesburg we\u2019re going to be hardest hit,\u201d Makhubo said. \u201cIf people start to struggle in other provinces, they are going to move to Johannesburg thinking there\u2019s opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city is reviewing its spending plans after revenue fell by 800 million rand in April due to reduced economic activity, he said.
