{"id":404509,"date":"2020-06-03T21:34:23","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T19:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=404509"},"modified":"2020-06-03T21:38:14","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T19:38:14","slug":"37525-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-jump-to-792","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/404509\/37525-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-jump-to-792\/","title":{"rendered":"37,525 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa as deaths jump to 792"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of health Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that South Africa now has <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">37,525<\/span> confirmed cases of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>This is up by 1,713 from the 35,812 infections reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The minister reported 37 more deaths, taking the number up to <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">792<\/span>, while recoveries increased to 19,682.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 785,979 tests have been conducted to date.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the cumulative number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 37 525, the total number of deaths is 792 and the recoveries to date are 19 682. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qh2ldlWvD5\">pic.twitter.com\/qh2ldlWvD5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1268261539418701825?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Globally, coronavirus cases topped 6.4 million globally on Wednesday, while deaths have exceeded 382,000, with more than 3 million recoveries.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden\u2019s top epidemiologist says more should have been done in his country to tackle Covid-19 at the start of the outbreak, in order to keep the death rate down, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we were to encounter the same illness with the same knowledge that we have today, I think our response would land somewhere in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done,\u201d Anders Tegnell said in an interview with Swedish Radio.<\/p>\n<p>Tegnell is the brains behind Sweden\u2019s controversial approach to fighting the virus, and the government of Stefan Lofven has deferred to the epidemiologist in its official response to the pandemic.
