{"id":404517,"date":"2020-06-03T14:20:20","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T12:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=404517"},"modified":"2020-06-03T14:20:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T12:20:20","slug":"these-3-south-african-stocks-are-set-to-benefit-most-post-covid-analysts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/404517\/these-3-south-african-stocks-are-set-to-benefit-most-post-covid-analysts\/","title":{"rendered":"These 3 South African stocks are set to benefit most post-Covid: analysts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bank of America (BofA) has published a new report focusing on stocks which could benefit the most &#8216;post-Covid&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The methodology used produces several stocks on the list that are familiar to South African investors, including Aspen, Naspers and Prosus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In mid-April we outlined how Covid-19 was likely to accelerate existing macro-social long-term trends: de-globalisation or localisation; automation; social instability; and populist policies,&#8221; the analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the benefit of more information since the peak of the crisis, we go a step further and create a framework to identify potential EEMEA (Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa) equity beneficiaries in the post-Covid world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>BofA used five key themes as a starting point, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geopolitics &amp; Deglobalisation;<\/li>\n<li>Tech Wars;<\/li>\n<li>Big Government;<\/li>\n<li>Health &#8211; New Wealth;<\/li>\n<li>The New Consumer: OK Zoomer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It then added a country overlay which emphasises the importance of local conditions where these companies operate.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text\">&#8220;The range of top 10 picks captures the breadth of post-Covid changes: digitalisation, increased focus on health, changing consumer preferences, but also the importance of localised supply chains and government protectionism,&#8221; it said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text\">&#8220;Our top healthcare pick is <strong>Aspen<\/strong>. The other <\/span><span class=\"text\">likely\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">EEMEA\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">beneficiaries<\/span><span class=\"text\"> are technology, media and telecom (TMT) names such as MTS, <strong>Naspers<\/strong>, Play and <strong>Prosus<\/strong>, which can outperform due to digitalisation and changing consumer preferences (e-commerce, e-entertainment, food delivery, online payments). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text\">&#8220;However, less obvious choices are also set to <\/span><span class=\"text\">outperform due to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">the new consumer: ENBD (online payments) and X5 (big data, online sales).&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stocks-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-404523 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stocks-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"852\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stocks-1.png 852w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stocks-1-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stocks-1-768x317.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 852px) 100vw, 852px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Aspen\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aspen is South Africa&#8217;s largest pharmaceutical company, selling a mixture of generic, branded, injectable and over-the-counter products globally, with significant operations in Europe (40% of revenues), South Africa (23%), China &amp; LATAM (20%), Australasia (12%) and MENA (3%).<\/p>\n<p>BofA said that it believes <span class=\"Text-H\"><span class=\"text\">Aspen could benefit from the following long-term mega themes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"Text-Bullet-H\">\n<li id=\"P4F1C6AA6\" class=\"Text-Bullet-P\"><span class=\"Text-Bullet-H\"><span class=\"text\"><strong>Health<\/strong>: the new wealth and focus for ESG.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">Aspen is a key supplier of critical anaesthetics and thrombosis products into Europe and China.<\/span><span class=\"text\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">These products are essential for hospitals treating critical care patients (such as severe Covid cases). The group also has relatively large market share in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"text\">Over the Counter<\/span><span class=\"text\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"text\">\u00a0medicines across Sub-Saharan Africa and Australia.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"Text-Bullet-H\">\n<li id=\"P10343361\" class=\"Text-Bullet-P\"><span class=\"Text-Bullet-H\"><span class=\"text\"><strong>Geopolitics &amp; de-globalisation:<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"text\">All 23 of Aspen<\/span><span class=\"text\">&#8216;<\/span><span class=\"text\">s manufacturing facilities remain online during lockdown with pharmaceuticals designated as essential business. The group is comfortable with its supply of APIs over the next three to four months, having built up stock (particularly of Heparin) despite India<\/span><span class=\"text\">&#8216;<\/span><span class=\"text\">s export ban on certain pharma products and 26 APIs.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"Text-Bullet-H\">\n<li id=\"P3DA3D83F\" class=\"Text-Bullet-P\"><span class=\"Text-Bullet-H\"><span class=\"text\"><strong>Big government:<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"text\">Aspen is a key supplier of generic antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to the public sector in South Africa. At the end of 2019, 4.7 million South Africans were receiving ARVs through the public sector (largest programme globally).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Aspen-Share-price.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-404553\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Aspen-Share-price.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"994\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Aspen-Share-price.png 994w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Aspen-Share-price-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Aspen-Share-price-768x527.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 994px) 100vw, 994px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Naspers and Prosus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Naspers is a media conglomerate with exposure to best-in-class social networking, games and e-commerce. <span class=\"text\">\u00a0It owns a 72.5% stake in Prosus and also leading South Africa<\/span><span class=\"text\">&#8216;<\/span><span class=\"text\">s online store Takealot and Media24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prosus offers similar exposure.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text\">BofA said the companies <\/span><span class=\"text\">strategy tallies well with long-term mega themes.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"P5A707B96\" class=\"Text-P\"><span class=\"Text-H\"><span class=\"text\"><strong>The New Consumer:<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"text\">Prosus offers exposure to Tencent but also key digitalisation themes across the globe i) food delivery, ii) classifieds and e-commerce, iii) online payments. Online classifieds represent 48% of the ex-Tencent some-of-the-parts for Prosus. Over the past three months, the company has carried out three M&amp;A transactions which will entrench its leading position across key markets.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"P28421ED5\" class=\"Text-P\"><span class=\"Text-H\"><strong><span class=\"text\">China recovery is underway:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"text\"> Four key drivers for Tencent going into 2H20: i) improving macro indicators in China, ii) mobile and internationalisation drive solid growth in games (c.45% of 1Q20E revenue); iii) macro recovery + enhanced monetisation = online advertising set to recover gradually throughout 2020; iv) payments are recovering from the lows.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" responders\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text\">Although Covid-19 has led many companies towards paralysis<\/span><span class=\"text\">\u00a0(i.e. operation closures and employee redundancies)<\/span><span class=\"text\">, some top responders have been agile\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text\">by adapting their business models in order to<\/span><span class=\"text\">\u00a0provide assistance<\/span><span class=\"text\">\u00a0during the crisis<\/span><span class=\"text\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This includes sentiment data as well as <span class=\"text\">Truvalue Lab<\/span><span class=\"text\">s<\/span><span class=\"text\"> dataset on volume (number of news items\/signals) .<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some of the top South African companies include Clicks, Life Healthcare, PSG Group, and Netcare and Mondi Plc.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\"
