{"id":406587,"date":"2020-06-10T22:20:51","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T20:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=406587"},"modified":"2020-06-10T22:25:02","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T20:25:02","slug":"55421-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-jump-to-1210","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/406587\/55421-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-jump-to-1210\/","title":{"rendered":"55,421 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa as deaths jump to 1,210"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of health Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that South Africa now has 55,421 confirmed cases of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>This is up by 2,430 cases from the 52,991 infections on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The minister announced 48 new deaths, taking the total up to <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">1,210<\/span>, while recoveries increased to 31,505, which translates to a recovery rate of 56.8%.<\/p>\n<p>A total of\u00a0 998,400 tests have been conducted to date, of which 30,330 tests have been conducted over the past 24-hour period.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the cumulative number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 55 421, the total number of deaths is 1210 and the recoveries to date are 31 505. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7MNNRskAHV\">pic.twitter.com\/7MNNRskAHV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1270811352970530825?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Globally, coronavirus cases topped 7.35 million globally on Wednesday, while deaths have exceeded 414,000, with more than 3.63 million recoveries.<\/p>\n<p>One of Europe\u2019s most-recognised asset managers is betting that a vaccine for the coronavirus will arrive this year, a key development that could presage a recovery for the global economy, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur central scenario today is that with 80% probability there will be a vaccine by year-end by the likes of Pfizer or someone like that,\u201d Cesar Perez Ruiz, Pictet Wealth Management\u2019s chief investment officer, said on a conference call.
