{"id":407531,"date":"2020-06-14T22:40:56","date_gmt":"2020-06-14T20:40:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=407531"},"modified":"2020-06-14T22:40:56","modified_gmt":"2020-06-14T20:40:56","slug":"70038-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-climb-to-1480","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/407531\/70038-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-climb-to-1480\/","title":{"rendered":"70,038 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa as deaths climb to 1,480"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that South Africa now has 70,038 confirmed cases of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>This is up by 4,302\u202c cases from the 65,736 infections on Saturday when the country recorded 3,809 new cases.<\/p>\n<p>The minister announced 57 new deaths, taking the total up to 1,480, while recoveries increased to 38,531, which translates to a recovery rate of 55%.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 1.12 million tests have been conducted to date, of which 34,071 tests have been conducted over the past 24-hour period.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, coronavirus cases topped 7.9 million on Sunday, while deaths have exceeded 432,000 and 4 million recoveries have been reported.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the cumulative number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 70 038, total number of deaths is 1480 and recoveries to date are 38 531 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NOWLwGOnMb\">pic.twitter.com\/NOWLwGOnMb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1272266759916134401?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>While the country&#8217;s coronavirus cases continue to increase, government\u00a0currently has no plans to review its relaxed lockdown rules and does not plan to reintroduce a countrywide ban on the sale of alcohol at this point in time.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sunday-times\/news\/2020-06-14-lockdown-cabinet-wont-reimpose-stringent-rules-despite-coming-covid-19-spike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sunday Times<\/strong><\/a>, Minister in the presidency Jackson said that the cabinet had not discussed reversing the relaxation of regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision of cabinet stands. It is not up for reviewal \u2026 we have not discussed the reviewal of those measures.
