{"id":408053,"date":"2020-06-16T11:41:37","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T09:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=408053"},"modified":"2020-06-16T11:41:37","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T09:41:37","slug":"zimbabwes-inflation-rate-hits-785-55","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/408053\/zimbabwes-inflation-rate-hits-785-55\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe\u2019s inflation rate hits 785.55%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zimbabwe\u2019s annual inflation surged to 785.55% in May from 765.57% in April, according to the National Statistics Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The month-on-month inflation rate in May was 15.13% from April\u2019s 17.64%, the agency said in a statement posted on its official Twitter account.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">2\/ The year on year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of May as measured by all items <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CPI?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CPI<\/a> stood at 785.55%<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CPI?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CPI<\/a> for the month ending May 2020 stood at 1,097.65 compared to 953.36 in April 2020 and 123.95 in May 2019<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewsDayZimbabwe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NewsDayZimbabwe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyNewsZim?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DailyNewsZim<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency &#8211; ZIMSTAT (@zimstat) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zimstat\/status\/1272777996357812225?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe\u2019s fixed currency peg, adopted in March, has become the latest flash point between central bank Governor John Mangudya and finance minister Mthuli Ncube, people familiar with the situation said.<\/p>\n<p>Mangudya unilaterally imposed the peg of 25 to the US dollar as the country entered a coronavirus lockdown in March, ignoring the recommendations of the Monetary Policy Committee and Ncube, the people said, asking not to be identified as the dispute hasn\u2019t been publicly disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the central bank governor\u2019s decision, a moving peg dictated by the market had been used.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of the peg came without warning and has further strained relations between Mangudya and Ncube, who have disagreed over a range of policy issues, the people said.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as black market rates for the Zimbabwe dollar range between 75 and 90 per unit of the US currency and the country\u2019s worst economic crisis since at least 2008 deepens.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s raised pressure on Mangudya and Ncube, who were last week called to testify to the politburo of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front over why the economy was deteriorating, the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper said.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation in April surged to 766% and shortages of fuel, foreign currency and power are commonplace.<\/p>\n<p>Mangudya and Ncube didn\u2019t answer calls made to their mobile phone or respond to text messages.
