{"id":408157,"date":"2020-06-20T15:16:56","date_gmt":"2020-06-20T13:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=408157"},"modified":"2020-06-19T13:17:15","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T11:17:15","slug":"heres-how-many-south-africans-say-they-cant-pay-their-bills-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/408157\/heres-how-many-south-africans-say-they-cant-pay-their-bills-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how many South Africans say they can&#8217;t pay their bills right now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Credit bureau TransUnion has published a new report showing how the coronavirus lockdown is affecting the financial position of South Africans, and their ability to pay bills.<\/p>\n<p>The report is based on a survey of 1,100 adults in South Africa between 28 May &#8211; 1 June.<\/p>\n<p>The survey shows that the\u00a0proportion of consumers saying they are negatively affected by Covid-19 has increased to 84%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consumers in the most vulnerable sectors of the economy are feeling the greatest impact on their income,&#8221; TransUnion said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;89% of consumers employed in each of the construction and restaurant or food services industries and 88% in the retail industry have had their income negatively affected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The survey shows that the proportion of consumers who are concerned about their ability to pay their current bills and loans has also steadily increased to 91%.<\/p>\n<p>Rent and utility payments remain the two bills of most concern, as 41% of consumers impacted are concerned about their ability to pay their rent and 40% about utilities.<\/p>\n<p>The average amount that consumers feel they will be &#8216;short&#8217; in paying bills is around <strong>R7,098.40<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers who were impacted said that they expect they will not be able to pay their bills or loans in about <strong>two months time<\/strong> (7.7 weeks).<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-408203 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"917\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-3.png 917w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-3-300x134.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-3-768x343.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cutting back\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The data also shows that consumers continue to tighten their purse strings. When asked what has changed as a result of the crisis, 60% of impacted consumers indicated that they are spending less on both entertainment and eating out, otherwise known as discretionary spending.<\/p>\n<p>More impacted consumers have cancelled or reduced digital services including wireless, satellite services and internet.\u00a0 A quarter (24%) of those affected financially have cut back on retirement savings.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-408185 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1061\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back.png 1061w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-300x109.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-1024x373.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-768x279.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1061px) 100vw, 1061px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It appears that to preserve cash flow, consumers are minimising payments against existing debt and bills,&#8221; TransUnion said.<\/p>\n<p>35% of affected consumers say they are making only partial payments on their debts and bills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consumers continue to borrow against their savings to close financial shortfalls, with 38% reporting this option as part of their game plan, up a significant eight percentage points compared to the prior wave of our survey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>TransUnion said that substantially more consumers financially impacted by the pandemic plan to borrow money from family or friends (26%) despite 60% reporting that they have reached out to companies they have accounts with to discuss payment options.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a quarter (21%) of consumers surveyed reported that they had payment holiday arrangements with their lenders and service providers.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-408197 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"997\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-2.png 997w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-2-300x97.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cut-back-2-768x250.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 997px) 100vw, 997px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Auto, personal loans and credit cards were the top three products for which consumers had these arrangements.
