Hetzner has announced that construction has started for its new data centre in Samrand, Gauteng, and that it expects to commission it later in the year (2013).<\/p>\n

According to Hetzner, its new data centre will have a hosting capacity of 1,200m\u00b2, which lets it house over 12,000 servers.<\/p>\n

The new facility is the first of five data centres under construction in what Hetzner said will become a Data Centre Park, modelling the building design and data centre efficiencies off of Hetzner Online\u2019s German facilities.<\/p>\n

Marketing and communications manager for Hetzner, Athena Turner, said that the designs include reducing their dependency on power intensive air-conditioning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever the ambient temperature allows for it, we will make use of direct free cooling which reduces power consumption significantly,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a long term project that we\u2019ve been preparing for,\u201c Turner added. \u201dSourcing the right location for our facility was paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n

In building their new data centre in Samrand, Turner explained that multi-homing has been made a reality for Hetzner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough negotiations with various upstream network providers to find the most suitable connectivity options that will benefit our customers and our growing business requirement, we can confirm that AfricaINX and Internet Solutions will function as our primary bandwidth providers,\u201d Turner said. \u201cThis will significantly increase Hetzner\u2019s network resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turner explained that while they chose Gauteng as the location for Hetzner\u2019s first Data Centre Park, their Cape Town customers already benefit from their recently retrofitted data centre at Great Westerford in Newlands which has adopted many of the same engineering principles.<\/p>\n
