{"id":415101,"date":"2020-07-10T11:06:18","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T09:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=415101"},"modified":"2020-07-10T11:07:46","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T09:07:46","slug":"stage-2-load-shedding-hits-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/415101\/stage-2-load-shedding-hits-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Stage 2 load shedding hits South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eskom has announced that stage 2 load shedding will be implemented on Friday (10 July) as the country&#8217;s power system comes under increased change.<\/p>\n<p>The power utility said that the power cuts will be introduced from 12h00 to 22h00.<\/p>\n<p>The group said that two units at the Arnot station, as well as a unit each at Kendal, Tutuka and Majuba were taken off the grid, removing more than 2,600MW of capacity.<\/p>\n<p>It said that the delayed return to service of a generation unit at the Duvha power station, has also added significant pressure to the system.<\/p>\n<p>Breakdowns have now exceeded 3,000MW, the power utility said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/POWERALERT?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#POWERALERT<\/a> 2<\/p>\n<p>Eskom to implement Stage 2 loadshedding starting at 12:00 as breakdowns increase<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/News24?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@News24<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eNCA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@eNCA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aYcyv3Tfvb\">pic.twitter.com\/aYcyv3Tfvb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eskom Hld SOC Ltd (@Eskom_SA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Eskom_SA\/status\/1281514162091372545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winter load shedding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In June, Eskom chief executive officer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/404615\/eskom-details-plans-for-winter-load-shedding-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andre de Ruyter<\/a><\/strong> said that the coronavirus lockdown has led to a direct decline in electricity usage in the country.<\/p>\n<p>However, De Ruyter stressed that Eskom\u2019s systems are still unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to recognise that due to the unreliability and unpredictability of the system, the risk of load shedding remains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be the reality until after the 18 months of reliability maintenance, which will last until August 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eskom said that the\u00a0current outlook is\u00a0<strong>three days of stage 1 (1,000 MW) load shedding during the month of July<\/strong>\u00a0where the demand is forecast to be approximately 33,600 MW should the power utility be in a position to limit the unplanned breakdowns and system losses to below 11,000 MW.<\/p>\n<p>This is based on an 80% probability, it said.
