With industry speculation suggesting that banking group\u00a0FNB<\/a>\u00a0is in discussions with\u00a0Cell C<\/a>\u00a0to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), the operator has revealed the subscriber numbers for Red Bull Mobile.<\/p>\n

Tagged as an MVNO,\u00a0Red Bull Mobile<\/a> launched in South Africa in February 2011, and is a joint partnership with Cell C. The\u00a0current agreement gives Cell C exclusivity rights.<\/p>\n

“Red Bull Mobile and Cell C have teamed up to bring you fantastic smartphones, competitive tariff plans and access to the World of Red Bull – all bundled into an all-inclusive package,”\u00a0the group said.<\/p>\n

“Red Bull Mobile has made steady progress since its launch in SA. The current base is in excess of 120,000 customers and continues to grow,” said\u00a0Jose Dos Santos<\/a>, Cell C chief commercial officer.<\/p>\n

Since its launch in February, Red Bull Mobile has\u00a0released\u00a0one prepaid, four postpaid (post & hybrid) and two data propositions into the market.<\/p>\n

The brand is also only available in Europe, in\u00a0Austria,\u00a0Belgium,\u00a0Hungary, and\u00a0Poland. And although currently available in\u00a0Australia, this platform is expected to wind down.<\/p>\n

“As of the 1st of September 2013, customers will no longer be able to recharge their account. Red Bull Mobile will continue to service existing customers until the customer\u2019s current recharge or contract expires,” the group announced at the start of July.<\/p>\n

Having surpassed 10 million customers in the second half of 2012, Cell C CEO,\u00a0Alan Knott-Craig<\/a> has expressed his desire to attain a\u00a0quarter of South Africa\u2019s mobile market share within four years from approximately 13%.<\/p>\n

In June, Orange Horizons CEO,\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Crozier<\/a>\u00a0told BusinessTech that French based global operator Orange wants to be an MVNO in South Africa.<\/p>\n

South Africa’s only other current MVNO is Virgin Mobile South Africa<\/a>,\u00a0which is reliant on Cell C\u2019s network, and says its subscriber base is\u00a0approaching\u00a0400,000.<\/p>\n
