{"id":417091,"date":"2020-07-16T12:35:43","date_gmt":"2020-07-16T10:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=417091"},"modified":"2020-07-16T12:35:43","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T10:35:43","slug":"south-africa-extends-its-longest-economic-slump-since-1945","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/417091\/south-africa-extends-its-longest-economic-slump-since-1945\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa extends its longest economic slump since 1945"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African economy extended its longest downward cycle since 1945 as restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus weighed on output and are set to hurt household finances even more.<\/p>\n<p>The economy entered the 80th month of a weakening cycle in July, according to data in the Reserve Bank\u2019s Quarterly Bulletin released Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s after a nationwide lockdown that started on 27 March shuttered most activity and weighed on output.<\/p>\n<p>Business and consumer confidence languish at\u00a0multi-year lows, with many firms having closed permanently and thousands of jobs lost.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/80-months.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-417095 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/80-months.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/80-months.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/80-months-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/80-months-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/80-months-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Household finances that deteriorated in the first quarter are likely to get much worse.<\/p>\n<p>Net wealth fell to 330% of nominal disposable income, compared with 360% in the three months through December, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s as a sharp drop in share prices due to virus-related panic trading weighed on the value of assets held by households, the central bank said.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s main stock index declined by 22% during the period, the largest decline since the third quarter of 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Portfolio outflows surged to R97.56 billion ($5.85 billion), the highest level on record. That\u2019s due to the net sales of debt and equity securities by non-residents, as well as the redemption of a $1.6 billion international government bond, the central bank said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Pay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About three million fewer people were employed in April, according to a National Income Dynamics Study-Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey published Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A third of all income earners in February weren\u2019t paid in April because they lost their jobs or were furloughed, the study showed.<\/p>\n<p>Growth in nominal remuneration per worker slowed to 4.1% in 2019 compared with 4.9% a year earlier, central bank data showed.<\/p>\n<p>That the lowest since 1970.
