{"id":417829,"date":"2020-07-20T09:39:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T07:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=417829"},"modified":"2020-07-20T09:39:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T07:39:23","slug":"south-african-restaurants-to-protest-lockdown-rules-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/417829\/south-african-restaurants-to-protest-lockdown-rules-this-week\/","title":{"rendered":"South African restaurants to protest lockdown rules this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Restaurants plan to place more than a million seats on streets around South Africa on Wednesday (22 July) as the industry protests the country&#8217;s current lockdown restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enca.com\/news\/restaurant-industry-protest-lockdown-regulations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eNCA<\/a><\/strong>, the Restaurant Association of South Africa&#8217;s Wendy Alberts said that the protest is open to everyone in the tourism and accommodation industry who have been affected by the regulations.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the regulations have impacted the industry across the board, with government failing to offer the necessary support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every single one of the regulations (have an impact on the industry). Right from insurance companies not giving payouts to not being able to get funding from the government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not being able to get the UIF TERS, not being able to operate our businesses properly, restrictions on liquor licences, the curfew, the timing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At every single turn, every statement and restriction has difficulty on the industry and has put us back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Establishments have taken to social media to voice their concerns, highlighting how many employees face losing their jobs and the potential knock-on effects for their families.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BjtYh0Uyd6M\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the June, Tourism minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/411309\/here-are-the-new-lockdown-rules-for-sit-down-restaurants-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outlined<\/a> <\/strong>the rules that restaurants and other parts of the tourism sector will need to follow as part of the country\u2019s move to an \u2018advanced level 3\u2019 lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Following the publication of these guidelines, sit-down restaurants were allowed to operate under the following restrictions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Restaurants are required to conduct a screening questionnaire on guests. Restaurants may refuse admission if they deem a guest is a safety risk;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>No person may enter the premises without a cloth mask or any homemade item that covers the nose and mouth;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Masks must be worn at all times except where eating and drinking;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>All guests must sanitise before entering the premises;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There must be distance of at least 1.5 metres between the customer and the point-of-sale serving counter.
