{"id":41814,"date":"2013-07-11T16:34:20","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T14:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=41814"},"modified":"2013-07-12T12:33:25","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T10:33:25","slug":"ccma-case-load-shock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/41814\/ccma-case-load-shock\/","title":{"rendered":"CCMA case load shock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (<a title=\"CCMA\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2580-CCMA-Commission-for-Conciliation-Mediation-and-Arbitration\">CCMA<\/a>) says it has experienced a 25% rise in the case workload over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>This, according to\u00a0<a title=\"Nerine Kahn\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/9273-Nerine-Kahn\">Nerine Kahn<\/a>, executive director of the CCMA, points towards the emergence of an adversarial relationship in the South African labour market.<\/p>\n<p>Kahn said the case workload in 2012 had escalated and reached an all-time high with 160,000 cases coming under spotlight. \u201cThis figure translates to over 13,000 cases per month or 3,333 cases per week or a total of 667 cases each working day,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unprecedented rise in the case load points to an antagonistic labour market relations\u00a0and this is worrying for stability in the labour market. The situation also indicates that the economic environment is becoming tough,\u201d cautioned Kahn.<\/p>\n<p>The CCMA lead said amid the budgetary problems, at the core of CCMA\u2019s function was mediating and arbitrating in labour disputes.<\/p>\n<p>She revealed that over the past year CCMA had handled 79% of cases dealing with unfair dismissals and this was followed by eight percent cases of unfair labour practices.<\/p>\n<p>Kahn expressed surprise over a recent dismal Commission for Employment Equity (CEE) Report on employment equity, which showed that black people still lagged behind on equity in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot believe that, in South Africa, we do not have discrimination in the workplace.
