{"id":418585,"date":"2020-07-21T17:05:50","date_gmt":"2020-07-21T15:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=418585"},"modified":"2020-07-21T17:05:50","modified_gmt":"2020-07-21T15:05:50","slug":"south-africa-is-getting-a-new-national-employment-policy-including-rules-around-hiring-foreigners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/418585\/south-africa-is-getting-a-new-national-employment-policy-including-rules-around-hiring-foreigners\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa is getting a new national employment policy &#8211; including rules around hiring foreigners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of\u00a0 Employment and Labour says it is in the process of developing a new &#8216;national employment policy&#8217; as it focuses on economic recovery post-Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a virtual National Assembly mini-plenary on Tuesday (21 July) the deputy minister of Employment and Labour Boitumelo Moloi said that the policy will include new regulations around labour migration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As part of a larger project to develop a national employment policy, labour migration policy development is being fast-tracked both to address immediate challenges, as in the road freight and logistics sector, as well as to coordinate labour migration policies with the southern region and continent-wide,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The inspectorate and enforcement services is focused on enforcing Covid-19 related health and safety directives. It will also prioritise advocacy work to promote compliance with labour legislation in the domestic sector.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There will also be renewed focus on implementing employment equity legislation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/414413\/government-looking-at-new-laws-to-limit-the-employment-of-foreigners-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> <\/strong>at the start of July, minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi says that the government is looking at new regulations to limit the employment of foreign nationals in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Nxesi said that the new legislation would not only be limited to the road and freight sector but also other industries which employ a high number of foreign workers.<\/p>\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The hospitality sector;<\/li>\n<li>Restaurants;<\/li>\n<li>Security;<\/li>\n<li>Farming and agriculture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking into this matter in a proper way. However, it is important to remember that we can\u2019t just \u2018do away with foreigners\u2019.
