{"id":418917,"date":"2020-07-22T23:09:55","date_gmt":"2020-07-22T21:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=418917"},"modified":"2020-07-22T23:09:55","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T21:09:55","slug":"394948-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-572-new-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/418917\/394948-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-572-new-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"394,948 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa, with 572 new deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that there are now a total of\u00a0 394,948 cases of coronavirus in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This is an increase of 13,150 cases from the 381,798 infections reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The minister announced 572 new Covid-19 related deaths, taking the total to <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> 5,940<\/span> casualties.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">229,175<\/span> recoveries to date.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 2.585 million tests have been conducted, with 48,553 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, Dr Mkhize said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the total number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 394 948, the total number of deaths is 5 940 and the total number of recoveries is 229 175. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VW2RKf6Qvk\">pic.twitter.com\/VW2RKf6Qvk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1286042582825480192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Since 31 December 2019 and as of 22 July 2020, approximately 15.1 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported, including approximately 621,000 deaths, and around 9.1 million recoveries.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and warned of stiff penalties for people who break quarantine rules as the number of Covid-19 cases surges, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>The new restrictions are being introduced a week before opposition and civil society groups planned to stage nationwide demonstrations over state corruption and the government\u2019s handling of a prolonged economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The number of coronavirus infections in Zimbabwe almost doubled to 1,713 by Tuesday, from 985 a week earlier, as the number of deaths jumped by 40% to 26.<\/p>\n<p>The number of locally transmitted cases has also exceeded imported ones for the first time, president Emmerson Mnangagwa said in a televised address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a very serious situation at our doorstep,\u201d Mnangagwa said late Tuesday, after earlier calling the surge in infections \u201cfrightening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new restrictions, to remain in place indefinitely, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., to be enforced by the nation\u2019s security forces<\/li>\n<li>Businesses will only be allowed to operate from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tourism outline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">Tourism minister Mmamokolo Kubayi-Ngubane says the department is finalizing the country\u2019s tourism recovery plan with a view of submitting it to Cabinet next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">She said this when she outlined the department\u2019s priorities for the year ahead during a National Assembly virtual mini-plenary on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">She said this as the tourism sector finds itself in a severe state due to the after-effects of lockdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u201cWorking together with various stakeholders we have put together the tourism Recovery plan and we are in the final stages of consultation and we will within the month of August submit the plan for Cabinet for Approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u201cSo far, the indications are that Tourism recovery will experience a number of phases, from hyper-local community attractions, through to broader domestic tourism, regional land and air markets, and resumption of world-wide international travel,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">Kubayi-Ngubane said with regards to interventions, the department envisages that phase one of interventions will primarily focus on the protection of the domestic supply side of the sector.
