Cell C<\/a> is working on a number of projects that will involve the introduction of apps, it says.<\/p>\n

Karin Fourie<\/a>, executive head of communications at Cell C told BusinessTech: \u201cWe currently do not have an app\u00a0store, however are working on a number of projects that will involve the introduction of apps, especially for access to content services, purchase of Cell C products and services and other business applications.\u201d<\/p>\n

When questioned about the value of apps and related services, Fourie said: \u201cThis is where the market is currently trending and we will have to move into this space quite soon with a white labelled product.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2011, MTN<\/a> said it aimed to take advantage of the explosion in the applications market by opening an applications store “in the near future”.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few years ago, MTN piloted a beta version of an app store with approximately 16,000 free apps, and the results from pilot are used for our analysis and business strategy,\u201d the group told BusinessTech.<\/p>\n

MTN\u2019s applications have been pulled into a portal called MTN Play, which offers its digital community music, games, entertainment, and news.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have MTN Play, a content portal, which attracts approximately a million unique users a month. The portal currently has about seven million hits per month,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n

When questioned over the group\u2019s traction in digital downloads, it said: \u201cMTN SA has observed that operating systems such as Android, BlackBerry and Symbian are gaining popularity and we continue to cater for all OEs. MTN has seen a satisfactory traction and charges for downloads differ.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vodacom<\/a> says its App\u00a0Store has over 140,000 apps, but is unable to comment any further due to it being in a closed period ahead of its Q1 trading update on 18 July.<\/p>\n
