{"id":421446,"date":"2020-07-31T10:50:43","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T08:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=421446"},"modified":"2020-07-31T10:50:43","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T08:50:43","slug":"58-people-are-murdered-every-day-in-south-africa-these-are-the-worst-areas-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/421446\/58-people-are-murdered-every-day-in-south-africa-these-are-the-worst-areas-2\/","title":{"rendered":"58 people are murdered every day in South Africa \u2013 these are the worst areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Poice minister Bheki Cele has published the latest crime statistics for South Africa, showing another jump in the number of murders recorded in the country.<\/p>\n<p>For the period 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020, the SAPS recorded 21,325 murders in the country, up 1.4% from the year before.<\/p>\n<p>This averages out to 58.4 murders each day, at a rate of 35.8 murders per 100,000 people based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/414781\/this-is-the-average-life-expectancy-in-south-africa-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>latest population estimates<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This continues the decades-long trend of violent crime increasing in South Africa as the reported number of murder cases in 2010 stood at 15,893,<\/p>\n<p>KZN saw the biggest annual jump in cases (464 murders), followed by Gauteng (60 murders), and Mpumalanga (50 murders).<\/p>\n<p>Notably, in 1,430 murder cases, the perpetrator was confirmed to be under the influence of alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-trend.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-421470 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-trend.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"976\" height=\"824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-trend.png 976w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-trend-300x253.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-trend-768x648.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The SAPS cited three main causes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Criminal behaviour<\/strong>, where murders happen as a result of other crimes and criminal activity;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Group behaviour<\/strong>, where gangs murder each other, taxi violence erupts, or mobs seek out vigilante justice; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social behaviour<\/strong>, where social ills (alcohol and drug abuse), dysfunctional relationships, unemployment and other problems lead to deaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the SAPS, the most common cause of murder in South Africa is an argument or misunderstanding. This is followed by domestic-related incidents and then mob justice. Other notable causes are murders during robberies, gang-related murders and then murders done in retaliation or for revenge.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-causes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-421536\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-causes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"941\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-causes.png 1197w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-causes-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-causes-1024x755.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Murder-causes-768x566.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 941px) 100vw, 941px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The worst areas for murder in South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aligning with the population distribution in South Africa, most murders take place in the most populous provinces \u2013 Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the Western Cape has accounted for over a third of the most murderous areas.
