{"id":421754,"date":"2020-08-01T22:30:01","date_gmt":"2020-08-01T20:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=421754"},"modified":"2020-08-01T22:30:01","modified_gmt":"2020-08-01T20:30:01","slug":"503290-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-climb-to-8153","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/421754\/503290-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-as-deaths-climb-to-8153\/","title":{"rendered":"503,290 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa as deaths climb to 8,153"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that there are now a total of 503,290 cases of coronavirus in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This is an increase of 10,107 cases from the 493,183 infections reported previously.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that there are 148 new Covid-19 related deaths, taking the total to 8,153 casualties, following 193 deaths reported on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mkhize pointed to 342,461 recoveries to date.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 3 million million tests have been conducted, with 42,450 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the minister said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of Today the total number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 503 290, the total number of deaths is 8153 and the total number of recoveries is 342 461. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xQYnMUUBAf\">pic.twitter.com\/xQYnMUUBAf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1289653442324004864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 1, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Since 31 December 2019 and as of 1 August 2020, 17.6 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported, including 679,505 deaths.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Covid-1-August.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-421778\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Covid-1-August.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"715\" height=\"884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Covid-1-August.jpg 1035w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Covid-1-August-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Covid-1-August-828x1024.jpg 828w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Covid-1-August-768x950.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>New top hotspot in South Africa&#8217;s epicentre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Funerals and protests continue to be a breeding ground for the spread of Coronavirus in Gauteng, says Premier David Makhura.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the Gauteng Provincial Command Council update on Friday, the Premier said he was particularly worried about public gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>Gauteng, which is the country\u2019s epicentre in terms of the number of infections, has 17, 574 Covid-19 cases since the outbreak, even though the number of recoveries is also high.<\/p>\n<p>Soweto is now the Gauteng\u2019s hotspot and has overtaken the Inner City and Mayfair, followed by the Alexandra and Wynberg area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a funeral at a hotspot, more people are likely to be infected,\u201d said the Premier, noting that some residents continue to gather socially and host parties, which is prohibited by the regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier cited a time when infections in Soshanguve, Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa were shooting up. \u201cWe traced it from one funeral [and another]\u2026 where over 1 000 people attended the funeral on 17 July (sic).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Makhura said he was also concerned about public transport, which poses a threat ever since the economy opened.<\/p>\n<p>While the number of daily Covid-19 cases in the past two weeks of July have been decreasing, it is too early to celebrate, Makhura said.<\/p>\n<p>In Ekurhuleni, which is home to Tembisa, and Diepsloot in Johannesburg, the rate of infections has been dropping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still in the midst of the storm. We still need to take the necessary precautions,\u201d the Premier said, urging citizens to take personal responsibility for their safety.<\/p>\n<p>Makhura said the province has 400 ward-based teams out of 500, which consist of health workers, who are driving awareness campaigns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not out of the woods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Mary Kawonga, who is leading the provincial Covid-19 advisory committee, said Gauteng has not reached the peak of infections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s ongoing transmission of this infection in the population,\u201d Kawonga said, adding that there were still transmissions occurring in areas outside the hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>Kawonga stressed the need to keep medically vulnerable people safe from infection.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed the importance of adopting non-pharmaceutical measures to curb the spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial distancing is our first point of call. There are situations where we can\u2019t socially distance as well as we\u2019d like to, such as getting into a taxi to get home,\u201d she said, urging people to use masks in public.<\/p>\n<p>Kawonga said people should play their role, as government is doing its part.
