AutoTrader has published its 2020 Car Industry Report which outlines the trends in South Africa’s used car market.<\/p>\n

The report is based on AutoTrader’s online search and sales data with over 401 million online searches considered.<\/p>\n

The data shows that the average selling price of a used car in the last year was R289,312, an increase of R9,003 over the previous year.<\/p>\n

The top-selling used car was the Ford Ranger, contributing 4.7% of all cars sold, at an average selling price of R305,944, average mileage of 85,948km, and an average year model of 2016.<\/p>\n

The Volkswagen Polo was second, contributing 4.7% of all cars sold, at an average price of R205,238, average mileage of 58,652km, and an average year model of 2016.<\/p>\n

The Polo narrowly missed out on taking the top spot, selling just 82 fewer units than the Ford Ranger.<\/p>\n

The Toyota Hilux was third, contributing 3.4% of all units sold, at an average price R327,807, an average mileage of 102,129km and an average year model of 2013.<\/p>\n

The report shows that the most sold body-type was the hatchback, accounting for 31% of the total units.<\/p>\n

The second and third most sold body-types were SUVs and sedans, which contributed 27% and 17% of the total cars sold, respectively.<\/p>\n

Globally and in South Africa, SUVs is the fastest-growing body-type segment, however, hatchbacks are still the most searched for and sold body-type, AutoTrader said.<\/p>\n

The group noted that hatchbacks are also the body-type with the lowest selling price and mileage combination.<\/p>\n

By comparison, coupe\u2019s have lower mileage\u2019s compared to most other body-types (besides hatchbacks) while being the highest priced on average.<\/p>\n

The most searched for model was the Toyota Hilux, claiming 2.8% of all searches (11.3 million).<\/p>\n

The Volkswagen Golf was second with 2.67% of all model searches (10.7 million), while the Mercedes-Benz was, accounting for 2.65% of total model searches (10.65 million).<\/p>\n
