{"id":423234,"date":"2020-08-05T22:19:07","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T20:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=423234"},"modified":"2020-08-05T22:22:47","modified_gmt":"2020-08-05T20:22:47","slug":"529877-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-414-news-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/423234\/529877-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-414-news-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"529,877 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa with 414 new deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that there are now a total of 529,877 cases of coronavirus in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This is an increase of 8,559 cases from the 521,318 infections reported previously.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that there are 414 new Covid-19 related deaths, taking the total to 9,298 casualties, following 345 deaths reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mkhize pointed to 377,266 recoveries to date.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 3.11 million tests have been conducted, with 34,989 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the minister said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the total number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 529 877, the total number of deaths is 9 298 and the total number of recoveries is 377 266. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BwjCyLr0hk\">pic.twitter.com\/BwjCyLr0hk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1291104923166232578?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 5, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Since 31 December 2019 and as of 5 August 2020, approximately 18.75 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported, including around 705,000 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The data pointed to approximately 12 million recoveries to date.<\/p>\n<p>Large sporting matches and music festivals pose special dangers due to the crowds involved and only countries that have the virus under control should allow them, but they need to do so gradually and limit the number of spectators, said Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organisation\u2019s Health Emergencies Program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all want sport back, we all want our festivals back,\u201d he said Wednesday, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s very unrealistic in countries with community transmission that we\u2019re going to see large gatherings like that this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People need to consider all social events\u2019 risks, said Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO\u2019s top epidemiologist on Covid-19. \u201cIt\u2019s not only the football matches,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis should be considered about birthday parties, about sleepovers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Countries experiencing intense transmission throughout the population need to be careful about schools, Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to do everything possible to bring our children back to school, and the most effective thing that we can do is to stop the disease in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO surge team expected in SA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first team of experts from the World Health Organisation, who will assist South Africa in its fight against Coronavirus, is set to arrive in the country on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 43 senior experts from across the globe, including renowned specialists Dr David Heymann (a seasoned infectious disease epidemiologist and public health expert) and Dr Mike Ryan, are among the team that will assist the country to refine its efforts against the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr Mike Ryan will lead the team from Geneva and will&#8230;
