{"id":424080,"date":"2020-08-09T22:08:16","date_gmt":"2020-08-09T20:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=424080"},"modified":"2020-08-09T22:08:16","modified_gmt":"2020-08-09T20:08:16","slug":"559858-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-198-new-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/424080\/559858-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-198-new-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"559,858 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa with 198 new deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that there are now a total of 559,858 cases of coronavirus in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This is an increase of 6,670 cases from the 553,188 infections reported previously.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that there are 198 new Covid-19 related deaths, taking the total to <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">10,408<\/span> casualties, following 301 deaths reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mkhize pointed to <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">411,147 <\/span>recoveries to date.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the total number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 559 858, the total number of deaths is 10 408 and the total number of recoveries is 411 147. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vi5OiJzMTB\">pic.twitter.com\/vi5OiJzMTB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1292538560558530560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A total of 3.25 million tests have been conducted, with 30,318 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Since 31 December 2019 and as of 9 August 2020, approximately 19.85 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported, including around 730,000 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The data pointed to approximately 12.75 million recoveries to date.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, the wealthy never traveled so well. With the economy on solid ground and financial assets soaring to new highs, investment in the travel industry boomed, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, one in 10 workers worldwide, or 330 million in all, owed their jobs to the travel and tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p>In the five years through 2019, the sector was responsible for one in five of jobs created globally.<\/p>\n<p>But that was the economy we once knew.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this massive engine of growth has been thrown into reverse as Covid-19 continues to ping-pong around the globe.
