An economic plan presented by the South African government last week was \u201cfragmented and uncoordinated,\u201d suggesting there\u2019s been little discussion on the proposals, the nation\u2019s main business lobby group said.<\/p>\n
State officials met business and labour-union representatives 13 August to discuss ways to revive an economy set to contract this year by the most in nine decades.<\/p>\n
Industry delegates offered a 900-slide presentation and labour groups showed \u201cdetailed\u201d proposals, with the government presenting a 17-slide ‘draft’ plan, Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busi Mavuso said Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt appeared to have been pulled together at the last minute from a variety of different sources without any discussion between them,\u201d Mavuso said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are good people – inside the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and among the analysts at National Treasury, for example. But why are they not being mobilised to do the research to form a coherent plan?\u201d<\/p>\n
President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Saturday the government is working on an urgent economic-recovery program, details of which will be announced in \u201cthe next few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mavuso said Ramaphosa has yet to deliver on a pledge made four months ago to present a \u201cdecisive\u201d economic plan.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe promised in April we would have it \u2018within days,\u2019\u201d she said. It was clear from the presentation to business and labour last week that \u201cnot much has really been done since.\u201d<\/p>\n
