{"id":43082,"date":"2013-07-28T23:04:16","date_gmt":"2013-07-28T21:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=43082"},"modified":"2013-07-29T09:17:28","modified_gmt":"2013-07-29T07:17:28","slug":"mtn-primed-for-ethiopia-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/43082\/mtn-primed-for-ethiopia-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN primed for Ethiopia growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While much has been made of <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a>\u2019s loss of a telco licence in Myanmar, in South East Asia, the group will be secretly pleased with its progress in another potentially lucrative market, having secured\u00a0a value-added licence in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>While Ethiopia has a population approaching 90 million, the Ethiopian Review puts the Africa&#8217;s second most populous country&#8217;s mobile penetration rate at about 17%, sourcing the ITU, with its internet penetration rate at just over 1%.<\/p>\n<p>Telecommunications in Ethiopia, however, is a monopoly controlled by <a title=\"Ethio Telecom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/9484-Ethio-Telecom\">Ethio Telecom<\/a>, formerly the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC).<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Reuters reported that\u00a0Ethiopia signed a $700-million agreement with China&#8217;s <a title=\"Huawei Technologies\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1651-Huawei-Technologies\">Huawei Technologies<\/a> to expand mobile phone infrastructure and introduce high-speed 4G broadband network in the capital Addis Ababa and 3G service throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement is half of a $1.6-billion project split between Huawei and <a title=\"ZTE\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1676-ZTE-Corporation\">ZTE<\/a>, with the latter expected to sign soon.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Ethiopia&#8217;s government gave approval for private companies to provide value-added services &#8211; all services other than standard voice calls.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia&#8217;s ministry of communications and information technology said it has received applications from 218 firms to provide such services, with MTN already granted a licence in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>While government has ruled out liberalising its telecom sector, according to Reuters, MTN&#8217;s CEO <a title=\"Sifiso Dabengwa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1729-Sifiso-Dabengwa\">Sifiso Dabengwa<\/a> told the Africa Report in May: &#8220;We&#8217;re very keen on the possible second licence in Ethiopia.
