{"id":43251,"date":"2013-07-30T23:21:19","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T21:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=43251"},"modified":"2013-07-31T08:43:26","modified_gmt":"2013-07-31T06:43:26","slug":"twitter-fakers-and-sa-politicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/43251\/twitter-fakers-and-sa-politicians\/","title":{"rendered":"Faking it: SA politicians on Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While South African political parties and their leaders gather <a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1711-Twitter\">Twitter<\/a> followers by the thousand, they may be shouting into an empty room.<\/p>\n<p>From established &#8220;tweeters&#8221; like Democratic Alliance (<a title=\"DA\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1696-DA-Democratic-Alliance\">DA<\/a>) leader <a title=\"Helen Zille\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6982-Helen-Zille\">Helen Zille<\/a>, to new parties such as the <a title=\"Julius Malema\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/9519-Julius-Malema\">Julius Malema<\/a>-led Economic Freedom Fighters (<a title=\"EFF\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/9520-Economic-Freedom-Fighters-EFF\">EFF<\/a>) garnering support &#8211; politicians from all sides of the South African political spectrum are finding a voice online.<\/p>\n<p>But while these groups and individuals have gathered followers in the tens of thousands, a suprising amount of digital &#8220;supporters&#8221; aren&#8217;t actually around to hear their message &#8211; or may not be not real at all.<\/p>\n<p>Online social media management tool, Status People, tracks fake, inactive and &#8220;real&#8221; Twitter accounts from a sample of\u00a0up to 1,000 followers. For accounts with around 50,000 followers, the site claims to provide &#8220;very accurate&#8221; insight into the legitimacy of accounts following them.<\/p>\n<p>According to the site, spam accounts tend to have few or no followers and few or no tweets &#8211; but tend to follow a lot of other accounts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for you to be sure when you communicate on Twitter that you are communicating with real and active followers,&#8221; Status People says on its site. &#8220;The more active your follower base the more likely they are to share your content.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When looking at South Africa&#8217;s political parties on Twitter, the ruling party, the <a title=\"ANC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2387-ANC-African-National-Congress\">ANC<\/a>, also rules the roost in terms of followers on its official accounts &#8211; Fakes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the ANC&#8217;s official Twitter account has the highest number of followers out of the political parties measured, it also has the lowest amount of active users and highest amount of fake users.<\/p>\n<p>ANC leader and South African President <a title=\"Jacob Zuma\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2611-Jacob-Zuma\">Jacob Zuma<\/a>, tweeting under the handle @SAPresident, has amassed\u00a0 265,026 followers &#8211; Fakes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The DA&#8217;s official Twitter account (@DA_News) has amassed close to 32,000 followers &#8211; however, only 41% of those are considered &#8220;good&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>DA party leader, Helen Zille has become the party&#8217;s go-to account for Twitter users who wish to interact with the DA, which has lead to her Twitter account, @helenzille, amassing 303,471 followers.<\/p>\n<p>Of that amount, however, 38% are considered fake accounts, 33% inactive and 29% good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agang &#8211; Fakes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Agang\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/9521-Agang-South-Africa\">Agang<\/a> &#8211; a new political party headed by <a title=\"Mamphela Ramphele\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7287-Mamphela-Ramphele\">Mamphela Ramphele<\/a> which launched in February 2013 &#8211; gained a lot of traction on social media at its launch. While the party has amassed close to 30,000 followers, 13% are considered fake.<\/p>\n<p>However, the party&#8217;s official Twitter account has the highest rate (49%) of good, or active, followers.<\/p>\n<p>Agang leader, Mamphela Ramphele has gained 20,062 followers to her personal account, @MamphelaR.
