{"id":43557,"date":"2013-08-02T10:12:12","date_gmt":"2013-08-02T08:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=43557"},"modified":"2013-08-02T12:48:23","modified_gmt":"2013-08-02T10:48:23","slug":"10-facts-about-social-media-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/43557\/10-facts-about-social-media-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"10 facts about social media in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Arthur Goldstuck\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1912-Arthur-Goldstuck\">Arthur Goldstuck<\/a>, MD of research firm <a title=\"World Wide Worx\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1911-World-Wide-Worx\">World Wide Worx<\/a>, has taken to social networking platform Twitter to present a snapshot of the 2013 social media landscape in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 points &#8211; which were presented as tweets (@art2gee) &#8211; serve as a preview to the annual report on the social media landscape in South Africa, which is largely targeted at marketers.<\/p>\n<p>According to Goldstuck, while SA <a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1711-Twitter\">Twitter<\/a> and <a title=\"LinkedIn\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1713-Linkedin\">LinkedIn<\/a> user numbers continue to grow, Facebook is near saturation for connected SA users, and <a title=\"Google+\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4846-Google\">Google+<\/a> is yet to find its key draw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Google+] still needs better reasons to use it, I.E. more good use cases,&#8221; Goldstuck said.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the 10 facts about the current social media landscape in South Africa:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Africa&#8217;s Twitter user base doubled this year, and Facebook is near saturation for connected SA consumers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Instagram use has shot up, closely tied to Twitter as consumers share photos across the platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Social bookmarking site use has plummeted, including Delicious, Digg, Friendfeed and StumbleUpon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>LinkedIn remains on a slow but steady growth curve in SA, with 20% growth from 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Google Plus uptake has flattened in South Africa &#8211; at approximately 500,000 active users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Executives buy into social: lack of management understanding is a much smaller barrier to entry in 2013.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Largest barrier to social media brand success remains effective time management of the channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>58% of major SA brands are now utilising Youtube as a marketing and communications medium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Of SA&#8217;s biggest brands surveyed, 92% post at least once a week to their social profiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>53% of social channels managed by marketing team; only 16% of brands outsource it to 3rd parties.
