{"id":436105,"date":"2020-09-27T07:29:41","date_gmt":"2020-09-27T05:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=436105"},"modified":"2020-09-27T07:35:07","modified_gmt":"2020-09-27T05:35:07","slug":"joburgs-william-nicol-drive-set-to-get-a-name-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/436105\/joburgs-william-nicol-drive-set-to-get-a-name-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Joburg&#8217;s William Nicol Drive set to get a name change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Johannesburg has started a public participation process to have William Nicol Drive renamed after struggle veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.<\/p>\n<p>City mayor Geoff Makhubo said that a city council meeting had agreed to the name change over a year ago, and that the road would be renamed &#8216;in time&#8217; following the public participation process and confirmation with Madikizela-Mandela&#8217;s family.<\/p>\n<p>William Nicol Drive was named after the Dutch-Reformed minister and Transvaal administrator at the time of its construction. Makhubo made the announcement on what would have been Madikizela-Mandela&#8217;s 84th birthday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In order to honor Mama <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WinnieMandela?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WinnieMandela<\/a>, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CityofJoburgZA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CityofJoburgZA<\/a> we have officially launched the start of the public participation process to rename William Nicol to Winnie Madikizela Mandela <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ebg8FL5m4j\">pic.twitter.com\/ebg8FL5m4j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Geoff Makhubo (@GeoffMakhubo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeoffMakhubo\/status\/1309767951625617410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 26, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<strong>Further name changes coming<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa says that that government plans to rename more towns and cities as it works to \u2018transform the heritage landscape\u2019 of the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a Heritage Day address on Thursday (24 September), the president said that building a united nation means the country must be aware of and check its own acts of racism and prejudice continuously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe naming and renaming of towns and cities forms part of this, as well as the erection of new statues and monuments. Monuments glorifying our divisive past should be repositioned and relocated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has generated controversy, with some saying we are trying to erase our history.\u201d The president said that any symbol, monument or activity that glorifies racism, that represents the country\u2019s ugly past, has no place in democratic South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe struggle against apartheid was first and foremost aimed at ensuring that all our people should reclaim their dignity, black and white.
