{"id":440639,"date":"2020-10-25T13:00:51","date_gmt":"2020-10-25T11:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=440639"},"modified":"2020-10-23T13:48:15","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T11:48:15","slug":"south-africas-top-10-most-valuable-brands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/440639\/south-africas-top-10-most-valuable-brands\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s top 10 most valuable brands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African brands dominate in Africa, making up the 10 most valuable brands according to the inaugural Africa 150 ranking by brand valuation consultants, Brand Finance.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile operator MTN is the most valuable brand at R54.4 billion ($3.3 billion), followed by Vodacom and First National Bank (FNB).<\/p>\n<p>MTN added 11 million subscribers in the first six months of the year to reach a total base of 262 million. It only lost 1% in brand value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with all big telcos globally, MTN is being squeezed from all sides as OTT (Over-The-Top) messaging apps like WhatsApp are impacting voice and SMS revenue, and challenger brands offer comparable data services at below-market rates, leading to fierce price competition and decreasing margins,\u201d Brand Finance said.<\/p>\n<p>Mzansi brands also claimed 87 of the 150 spots and accounted for 76% of total brand value. Only 19 countries out of the 54 on the continent made the rankings.<\/p>\n<p>But the 150 brands in the rankings could lose almost R1 trillion ($60 billion) in value because of the Covid-19. This is in line with the R16.4 trillion ($1 trillion) drop the 500 most valuable brands globally experienced.<\/p>\n<p>Brand Finance Africa managing director Jeremy Sampson said the African market \u201cremains immature and fragmented\u201d compared to its global counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BrandFinance.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-440641\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BrandFinance.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"902\" height=\"902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BrandFinance.png 902w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BrandFinance-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BrandFinance-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BrandFinance-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 902px) 100vw, 902px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of connectedness between nations across the continent means that brands\u2019 growth is being stifled and they are unable to flourish beyond their home markets,\u201d Sampson said. \u201cThis does pose, however, a great opportunity for African brands to develop in a market ripe for consolidation and M&amp;A (Mergers and Acquisitions).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brand Finance London valuation director Declan Ahern said there are no \u201ctruly Pan-African brands\u201d and that the highest performing ones often operate from their home countries, so they find \u201cthemselves a complete unknown across the continent and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brand Finance ranked Vodacom the strongest brand, scoring 89.5 out of a 100 on the Brand Strength Index (BSI).
