{"id":44111,"date":"2013-08-15T23:31:41","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T21:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=44111"},"modified":"2013-08-16T09:20:09","modified_gmt":"2013-08-16T07:20:09","slug":"global-mobile-penetration-rates-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/44111\/global-mobile-penetration-rates-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Global mobile penetration rates revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With global mobile connections expected to hit 9.7 billion by the end of 2017, data from the World Bank shows which regions and countries are currently leading the way.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent report by the GSM Association (<a title=\"GSMA\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/5504-GSM-Association\">GSMA<\/a>), global mobile penetration in terms of connections is fast-approaching 100%, and is expected to blast past the world population by the end of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The GSMA makes a distinction between mobile \u201cconnections\u201d (number of SIM cards on a network) and mobile \u201csubscriptions\u201d (number of individual people on a network).<\/p>\n<p>In its Mobile Economy 2013 report, the GSMA indicated that global connections are expected to reach 7.4 billion by the end of 2013, hitting 9.7 billion by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The GSMA says that in Q4 2012, South Africa\u2019s mobile penetration stood at 138% in terms of connections. In terms of subscriptions, however, the figure is significantly smaller at 66% of the population.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a title=\"World Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7003-World-Bank\">World Bank<\/a>, mobile cellular subscriptions are subscriptions to a public mobile telephone service using cellular technology, which provide access to the public switched telephone network. while mobile subscriptions were at 66%.
