since the last time we asked?”

The results of the study indicated that Facebook use makes people more negative and unhappy over time.

Why the long face?

The study, which tracked how worried, lonely and satisfied participants felt during the testing phase, found a direct link between Facebook and negative psychological states.

“The more people used Facebook at one time point, the worse they felt the next time we text-messaged them; the more they used Facebook over two-weeks, the more their life satisfaction levels declined over time,” the researchers said.

Conversely, the study found that interacting with other people “directly” did not lead to these negative outcomes.

Participants were not moderated by the size of their Facebook networks, their perceived supportiveness, motivation for using Facebook, gender, loneliness, self-esteem, or depression.

“On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection,” the researchers said.

“Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it.”

However, the researchers also provided alternative explanations for their findings.

Does Facebook make you feel like this?

Is Facebook really to blame?

The first alternative explanation was that possibly any form of social interaction undermines well-being.

“Another alternative explanation for these results is that people use Facebook when they feel bad (i.e., when they are bored lonely, worried or otherwise distressed), and feeling bad leads to declines in well-being, rather than Facebook use per se,” they said.

According to the researchers, however, there was no evidence to support these interpretations, as direct social interaction actually made participants feel happier, and the research data showed that people felt worse after using Facebook, rather than before.

The research paper did concede that it would be “unrealistic” to expect any single factor to powerfully influence subjective well-being, but emphasised that it was important to identify any factor that could influence it, “especially when that factor is likely to accumulate over time among large numbers of people.”

“Rather than enhancing well-being, as frequent interactions with supportive ‘offline’ social networks powerfully do, the current findings demonstrate that interacting with Facebook may predict the opposite result for young adults — it may undermine it.”

More on Facebook

Facebook hits 1 billion users

SA Facebook users in alarming decline

Facebook’s dirty little tween secret

South Africans are bored with Facebook

If you’re feeling unhappy and dissatisfied with life, a new study suggest that it’s because you’re on Facebook.

[1
6496,45,26
post-44305","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trending","tag-depression","tag-facebook","tag-headline
["GET
