{"id":44595,"date":"2013-08-22T09:55:48","date_gmt":"2013-08-22T07:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=44595"},"modified":"2013-08-22T10:48:51","modified_gmt":"2013-08-22T08:48:51","slug":"cell-c-admits-network-taking-strain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/44595\/cell-c-admits-network-taking-strain\/","title":{"rendered":"Cell C admits network &#8220;taking strain&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to alleviate its strained network, <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> says it\u00a0will roll out an additional 100 sites in Johannesburg over the next three months at a cost of R200 million.<\/p>\n<p>This is in addition to an existing 959 sites in Johannesburg,\u00a0with the first 19 expected to be on air by the end of August.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C\u00a0subscribers have been vociferous in recent months, complaining about poor connectivity on the operator&#8217;s network.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the areas earmarked for additional sites in Johannesburg include Sandton, Fourways, Bryanston, Morningside, Soweto and Benoni, amongst others.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C, which recently announced a subscriber base of\u00a011.7 million,\u00a0said it will also build an additional 70 indoor coverage sites in Johannesburg and Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraffic on our network has doubled over the past year and we\u2019ve been hard at work rolling out new sites and installing additional capacity to cater for this growth and restore quality,\u201d said <a title=\"Alan Knott-Craig\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1642-Alan-Knott-Craig-%28Senior%29\">Alan Knott-Craig<\/a>, Cell C CEO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, the network in Johannesburg and Pretoria has been taking strain. In addition to the new sites, we have also embarked on a project to optimise close to 900 existing sites in Johannesburg and Pretoria to improve coverage and minimise interference on the network in high-density areas.
