{"id":449411,"date":"2020-11-18T07:34:31","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T05:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=449411"},"modified":"2020-11-18T07:34:31","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T05:34:31","slug":"ramaphosa-and-biden-have-phone-call-in-positive-start-to-relations-heres-what-they-talked-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/449411\/ramaphosa-and-biden-have-phone-call-in-positive-start-to-relations-heres-what-they-talked-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa and Biden have phone call in positive start to relations &#8211; here&#8217;s what they talked about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is hopeful of a strong partnership between the United States and the African continent following the recent presidential election of Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>This follows a call between Ramaphosa and US president-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday (17 November) during which the leaders discussed ways to strengthen US-Africa relations and overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>US <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andrewsolender\/2020\/11\/17\/biden-suggests-world-leaders-express-enthusiasm-over-no-longer-dealing-with-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media reports<\/a><\/strong> indicate that other issues on the agenda include stamping out corruption, the containment of Covid-19, the recovery of the global economy, as well as the issue of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by the South African presidency, Ramaphosa indicated that he was positive on the strong relationship with the US under a Biden presidency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President-Elect Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris have identified Africa as a major player in international affairs and in the advancement of multilateralism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The leaders recalled a visit to South Africa by President-Elect Biden during the dark days of apartheid, where Mr Biden demonstrated his commitment to human rights and dignity for all South Africans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Biden expressed his admiration for what the democratic South Africa has achieved. Ramaphosa said he looked forward to a strong partnership at a bilateral level and between the United States and the continent of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa also wished president-elect Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris well for their term in office.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic candidate, Biden, was elected the 46th president of the United States of America earlier this month, beating the incumbent Republican, Donald Trump in the Presidential elections.
