{"id":44960,"date":"2013-08-29T15:07:12","date_gmt":"2013-08-29T13:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=44960"},"modified":"2013-08-30T09:18:45","modified_gmt":"2013-08-30T07:18:45","slug":"mtn-sponsorships-questioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/44960\/mtn-sponsorships-questioned\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN sponsorships questioned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> has confirmed that it is reviewing its sponsporship strategy, after BusinessDay reported that an audit in its possession had flagged more than R19 million in irregular agreements.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, a <a title=\"KPMG\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3383-Kpmg\">KPMG<\/a> audit of MTN highlighted a lack of process, policies and procedures with regards to\u00a0sponsorships at the mobile operator.<\/p>\n<p>It questioned sponsorship payments made through agencies &#8211; amounting to R62 million for the current year &#8211; despite the company having a sponsorship account for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Key beneficiaries, according to the report, were football clubs Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows; annual football tournament, MTN8; cycling team MTN, Qhubeka; and music group, Joyous Celebration.<\/p>\n<p>In a written statement, MTN confirmed that an audit was conducted &#8220;in line with normal business practices linked to governance&#8221;, but declined to comment on any additional details.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accordingly, the company would like to reiterate that the decisions to sponsor or not are always informed by MTN\u2019s strategic direction,&#8221;
