{"id":45325,"date":"2013-09-04T16:24:18","date_gmt":"2013-09-04T14:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=45325"},"modified":"2013-09-04T16:26:17","modified_gmt":"2013-09-04T14:26:17","slug":"android-kitkat-unveiled-by-google-and-nestle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/45325\/android-kitkat-unveiled-by-google-and-nestle\/","title":{"rendered":"Android KitKat unveiled by Google and Nestle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google made a surprise announcement with Nestl\u00e9 on Wednesday, 4 September 2013, when it revealed that the next version of Android would be branded \u201cKitKat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also confirmed that the next version number would be 4.4 and not 5.0.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe news that the letter \u2018K\u2019 will be dedicated to Nestl\u00e9\u2019s KitKat will surprise most technology commentators, who had widely thought the latest version would be \u2018Android Key Lime Pie\u2019,\u201d the press release stated.<\/p>\n<p>To mark the release of Android KitKat, Google and Nestl\u00e9 announced that over 50 million specially branded KitKat bars will be available in 19 countries including Australia, Brazil, Dubai, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The packs will lead consumers to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/android.com\/kitkat\">Android KitKat website<\/a>\u00a0where they will have the opportunity to win prizes including a limited number of Google Nexus 7 tablets, and credits to spend in Google\u2019s online content marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>A small number of Android robot-shaped KitKat bars will also be offered as prizes in selected markets.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OKOrkLxOBoY\" height=\"338\" width=\"600\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>In secret<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-23926938\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that the packaging for these bars had to be produced in advance over the past two months, yet Google and Nestl\u00e9 still managed to keep the story a secret.<\/p>\n<p>According to the BBC, executives from Nestl\u00e9 and Google met face to face at a secret event held at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2013 to finalise the details.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting Patrice Bula, Nestle\u2019s head of marketing, the BBC report said that keeping the deal secret was \u201cparamount to Google\u2019s strategy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships is quoted as saying that if they said the \u201cK\u201d release is secret then people would have tried to figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Google continued to call the release \u201cKey Lime Pie\u201d, even with partners, Lagerling is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC also reported that Lagerling said that no money changed hands as part of the deal with KitKat.
