Sales of classic cars, on the other hand, have remained positively stable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;2020 was a very strange year: There was a lot of appetite\u201d to buy cars, says Brian Rabold, vice president of valuation services at Hagerty, a company that insures classic and collectible cars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The proliferation of online platforms from auction houses and startups alike enabled consumer hunger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people had more time, they weren\u2019t traveling, they weren\u2019t leaving the house. You could just sit in front of the computer and shop. All of that conspired to make 2020 really strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gooding &amp; Co auction house reported $9.2 million in sales and a respectable 77% sell-through for its Geared online auction, which saw blue-chip classics like the $1.14 million 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing hammer well within its pricing estimates.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0Bring a Trailer, founder Randy Nonnenberg reported his\u00a0highest-ever day for traffic\u00a0amid some of the darkest days of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on the private car market, Steve Serio, automotive\u00a0broker to\u00a0stand-up\u00a0stars and the publicity-shy, will have his best year ever \u201cin terms of\u00a0cars worth more than $1 million,\u201d\u00a0he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn unstable times, car people tend to hang onto their blue-chip cars and get other ones, so there\u2019s a lot of interest that has picked up there,\u201d Rabold agrees. \u201cPrivate sales are happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That confidence bodes well for the classic car market next year.<\/p>\n<p>Rabold and a team of 18 Hagerty analysts combined data from\u00a0auction and private\u00a0sales, classified ads, insurance quotes, demographic charts that measure\u00a0youth appeal, and even statistics about\u00a0imports and exports to develop a list of the 10 collectable cars they expect will enjoy\u00a0double-digit value growth in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called \u201cBull List\u201d includes everything from a Jaguar that debuted in 1948\u00a0to a hot\u00a0rod Jeep. Each of the vehicles below is expected to\u00a0far\u00a0outpace\u00a0anything else in its\u00a0segment in terms of value.<\/p>\n<p>Not on the list:\u00a0old American muscle cars and the 1970s-era Porsche 911 Turbos that have dominated private car sales and public car auctions in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething like the Turbo 911 is\u00a0a great example of a car that has enjoyed its ride and has been a big winner for the last couple years, but for now a lot of those are fully priced,\u201d Rabold says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean five years from now, it won\u2019t appreciate wildly again.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Lexus LFA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lexus-LFA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-455638 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lexus-LFA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lexus-LFA.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lexus-LFA-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lexus-LFA-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lexus-LFA-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Years to buy:\u00a0<\/strong>2011\u201312<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes:\u00a0<\/strong>The two-seater is basically an oddball, front-engined, exotic-style supercar with a 552-horsepower V10 engine and video-game styling. When it debuted in 2011, it was\u00a0unlike anything at the time from Italy or Germany. Unlike anything from Toyota, either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Godzilla and a PlayStation got together to make a car, this would be it,\u201d Hagerty notes. It\u2019s a polarizing aesthetic. But if you hate it, go for the 6.1 liters of Hemi-powered V8 muscle under its hood: pure Americana.<\/p>\n<p>This is the true \u201chot rod\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-08-26\/why-now-s-the-time-to-buy-a-1984-1991-jeep-grand-wagoneer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wagoneer<\/a>. Best of all, the Vantage was then aimed at the newly and near-rich, so it had a competitive base price set\u00a0just above that of a Porsche 911.<\/p>\n<p>Hagerty reports that models with the 4.7-liter V8 engine will see the strongest growth.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Honda S600<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Honda-S600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-455646 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Honda-S600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Honda-S600.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Honda-S600-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Honda-S600-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Honda-S600-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Years to buy:\u00a0<\/strong>1964\u201370<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes:\u00a0<\/strong>The S600 was not exported to the U.S., so it\u2019s rare to find a S600 version in left-hand drive, but they are worth seeking out. Initially available as an inline-four\u00a0roadster and a coupe, it was the first car Honda ever produced and made available in two trim levels.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t fast (the 57\u00a0hp engine could maybe reach a top speed of 90 mph \u2026 downhill), but it was fun.\u00a0\u201cThe joy you\u2019ll receive in owning and driving one of these models is an automatic hedge against the financial risk inherent with any major expenditure,\u201d Rabold says.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VW-Wesfalia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-455648 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VW-Wesfalia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VW-Wesfalia.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VW-Wesfalia-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VW-Wesfalia-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VW-Wesfalia-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Years to buy:\u00a0<\/strong>1980\u201391<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes:\u00a0<\/strong>The hipster darling\u00a0origin of the\u00a0Van Life movement\u2014along with\u00a0microvans\u00a0and the VW bus\u2014the classic Vanagon remains desirable in large part because of the \u201cromance\u201d of life on the open road, Hagerty says. (A pandemic doesn\u2019t hurt, either.)<\/p>\n<p>VW\u2019s steadfast refusal to replace it with anything\u00a0nearly as practical, classic-looking, and inexpensive means that existing examples will continue to garner fans. \u201cIt gives you mobility and flexibility\u00a0and a lot of freedom,\u201d Rabold says. \u201cPlus, it comes in so many variants. You can customize it to be exactly what you want.
