{"id":456448,"date":"2020-12-11T15:37:53","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T13:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=456448"},"modified":"2020-12-11T15:37:53","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T13:37:53","slug":"worrying-corruption-findings-among-south-africas-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/456448\/worrying-corruption-findings-among-south-africas-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Worrying corruption findings among South Africa&#8217;s youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A survey by the civil society group Corruption Watch finds that not only are young people victims of corruption in South Africa, but they are becoming perpetrators too.<\/p>\n<p>The survey was conducted in the second half of 2020 among 1,561 respondents aged between 18 and 35-years-old.<\/p>\n<p>The findings showed that only 51% of youth identified the giving of a monetary reward in exchange for a tender to be corruption \u2013 &#8220;and given the appalling levels of corruption exposed over the year in Covid-related procurement, for a kickback to be seen as normal is nothing short of disastrous&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are routinely asked to engage in corrupt activities to secure a job, or pass their driver\u2019s licence test, or merely gain access to basic goods and services which are their constitutional right,\u201d the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just over half (51%) of respondents did not consider threatening a teacher with extortion in exchange for high marks on a school paper as corruption;<\/li>\n<li>Compared to males, those who identify as female or gender non-conforming are more than 50% more likely to be asked to perform sexual favours in exchange for access to a job, financial resources, or better marks;<\/li>\n<li>Almost all respondents (93%) consider abuse of power, followed by greed (85%), to be the main causes of corruption. Other factors included low salaries, peer pressure, and fear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-456456\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"718\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch.png 718w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch-300x249.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Respondents said they most often been asked for sexual favours in return for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A job (15%);<\/li>\n<li>Access to financial resources (5%);<\/li>\n<li>Better marks or grades school or university (3%);<\/li>\n<li>To avoid getting arrested (2%); and<\/li>\n<li>A tender (2%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-456460\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"918\" height=\"577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch1.png 918w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch1-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CorruptionWatch1-768x483.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 918px) 100vw, 918px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAccording to the survey, the institutions perceived to the most corrupt are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The police (76%);<\/li>\n<li>Local government (75%);<\/li>\n<li>Traffic and licensing departments (75%);<\/li>\n<li>Parliament (68%), and<\/li>\n<li>The business sector (49%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> Top 5 causes of corruption<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Corruption.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-456470\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Corruption.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"869\" height=\"647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Corruption.png 869w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Corruption-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Corruption-768x572.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px\" \/><\/a>Most respondents said they have paid bribes for the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Access to a public service like healthcare, water or electricity (7%);<\/li>\n<li>A job (7%);<\/li>\n<li>To avoid a traffic fine or getting arrested (6%);<\/li>\n<li>Access to financial resources (6%); and<\/li>\n<li>Access to land and\/or housing (4%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With high youth unemployment in South Africa, 86% of respondents felt that corruption limits the opportunities of young people.
