{"id":45863,"date":"2013-09-12T17:02:15","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T15:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=45863"},"modified":"2013-09-12T17:27:47","modified_gmt":"2013-09-12T15:27:47","slug":"moneyweb-sees-earnings-slide-hits-out-at-wrongdoers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/45863\/moneyweb-sees-earnings-slide-hits-out-at-wrongdoers\/","title":{"rendered":"Moneyweb sees earnings slide, hits out at wrongdoers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Moneyweb on Thursday (12 September) reported a substantial fall in revenue to R34.34 million\u00a0for the 12 months ended June 2013, from R44.85 million before, citing a decline in advertising revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The group reported a total comprehensive loss for the period of R89,000, from a prior loss of R3.84 million in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The group noted that it\u00a0changed its year end to June from last year and thus the results for the year are compared to the prior 15 month period.<\/p>\n<p>In the financial year, Moneyweb said it went through a transition from using an external advertising sales agency to building an in-house sales team to work in conjunction with SABC sales.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue for the year included a net R3.256 million contract termination fee received from Caxton for the termination of its Looklocal contract.<\/p>\n<p>This fee, Moneyweb said, ensured that the group remained in a profit before tax position as at year end.<\/p>\n<p>The media group reflected a net profit before tax of R286,000 and headline earnings of R2.6 million.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22316\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Alec-Hogg-Moneyweb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22316\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22316\" alt=\"Alec Hogg\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Alec-Hogg-Moneyweb.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Alec-Hogg-Moneyweb.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Alec-Hogg-Moneyweb-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alec Hogg<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Litigation woes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moneyweb said it incurred un-budgeted expenditure in protecting its rights.<\/p>\n<p>It said that, during the year, Alec Hogg, founder of the group, misappropriated a client database belonging to Moneyweb, &#8220;which he then used to send mailers to persons he wished to direct to his own website&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Moneyweb said that, initially, Hogg falsely asserted that he owned the intellectual property in the database. However, on receipt of an application to interdict him, Hogg &#8220;capitulated&#8221; and a court order against him was obtained.<\/p>\n<p>The group said that significant progress has been made in prosecuting Danie Wessels, a former financial director appointed by\u00a0prior management, for fraud.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is anticipated that Mr Wessels may avoid a custodial sentence, as he has made proposals to\u00a0repay a portion of the stolen funds to Moneyweb,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Hogg resigned from Moneyweb in October 2012 on 12 months&#8217; notice, citing differences in his and controlling shareholder, Caxton&#8217;s\u00a0value systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The primary dispute with Mr Hogg related to his handling of the migration of the advertising sales function,\u00a0and the short-term destruction of Moneyweb\u00b4s advertising revenue stream,&#8221; said\u00a0Moneyweb\u00a0chairman, Paul Jenkins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plagiarism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moneyweb said that, of\u00a0grave concern to the group in the last year has been the repeated use of its copyright protected material by\u00a0competitor, Fin24.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it has launched a court application\u00a0to declare the copying of articles to be unlawful and to interdict the continuing publication of\u00a0the articles by Fin24 on its website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the heart of this litigation is the contention by Moneyweb that Fin24 is engaged in<br \/>\nsystematic plagiarism on an industrial scale, as part of its business model, to gain a commercial advantage for itself,&#8221; Moneyweb said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Moneyweb said it\u00a0is revising its strategy on apps as it has not obtained the revenues anticipated.
