{"id":45904,"date":"2013-09-13T12:36:05","date_gmt":"2013-09-13T10:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=45904"},"modified":"2013-09-13T12:38:09","modified_gmt":"2013-09-13T10:38:09","slug":"protect-the-media-madonsela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/45904\/protect-the-media-madonsela\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect the media: Madonsela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s media needs to be protected, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Friday (13 September).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The media helps to keep democracy alive, though they sometimes get it wrong,&#8221; she told an Association of Independent Publishers conference in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What a sad day it would be that corruption were to continue because there was no media to inform us of it. Let us protect the media.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Madonsela said it was society&#8217;s duty to protect the independence of the media, and indicated that the media helped her office perform its core functions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The media is the most effective accountability mechanism, as in the world it watches closely over those that exercise power in public platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Madonsela&#8217;s comments follow remarks by President\u00a0<a title=\"Jacob Zuma\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2611-Jacob-Zuma\">Jacob Zuma<\/a>\u00a0earlier this week on the\u00a0political economy of the media and the role of the media in nation building and balanced reporting.<\/p>\n<p>The president was speaking to second year journalism students from Tshwane University of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2013-09-10-zuma-condemns-opposite-of-the-positive-sa-media\" href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2013-09-10-zuma-condemns-opposite-of-the-positive-sa-media\" target=\"_blank\">Mail &amp;
