{"id":459400,"date":"2021-01-07T07:40:58","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T05:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=459400"},"modified":"2021-01-07T07:40:58","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T05:40:58","slug":"south-africa-hits-grim-milestone-as-it-considers-tougher-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/459400\/south-africa-hits-grim-milestone-as-it-considers-tougher-restrictions\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa hits grim milestone as it considers tougher restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said that South Africa hit a &#8216;grim milestone&#8217; on Wednesday (6 January) after it reported more than 20,000 new Covid-19 cases in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>The country reported <span class=\"fontstyle2\">21,832 <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">cases, bringing the total cumulative Covid-19 cases in South Africa to <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle2\">1,149,591<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">. R<span class=\"fontstyle2\">ecoveries now stand at\u00a0<\/span>929,239 <span class=\"fontstyle2\">at a recovery rate of 80.8%<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><span class=\"fontstyle2\">A further <\/span>844\u00a0<span class=\"fontstyle2\">deaths have been reported, with 452 new deaths reported in the Eastern Cape alone. Mkhize explained that this statistical anomaly was due to a reporting backlog and the reconciliation of data.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\">&#8220;The 452 deaths reported from the Eastern Cape are as a result of data reconciliation dating between May and November 2020 &#8211; this includes analysis of community cases where post-mortem swabs were taken for Covid testing and analysis of clinical records where the diagnosis was unconfirmed at the time of demise,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\">&#8220;The National Department of Health is engaging the province to investigate the details of the reporting backlog.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As of today, the total number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases is 1 149 591, the total number of deaths is 31 368 and the total number of recoveries is 929 239. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ceWOvUlWyw\">pic.twitter.com\/ceWOvUlWyw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1346938540152729600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 6, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa&#8217;s National Corronavirus Command Council (NCCC) met to discuss the country&#8217;s Covid-19 situation on Wednesday morning, with sources indicating that further restrictions are being considered.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/459358\/government-looking-at-tougher-lockdown-for-south-africa-including-a-move-to-level-4-restrictions-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong> reported that Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Police Minister Bheki Cele have recommended the country move to virus alert level 4 for 30 days, the sources said.
