{"id":459462,"date":"2021-01-07T10:36:54","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T08:36:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=459462"},"modified":"2021-01-07T10:36:54","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T08:36:54","slug":"users-will-be-blocked-from-using-whatsapp-unless-they-agree-to-facebook-privacy-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/459462\/users-will-be-blocked-from-using-whatsapp-unless-they-agree-to-facebook-privacy-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"Users will be blocked from using WhatsApp unless they agree to Facebook privacy changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Messaging service WhatsApp has updated its terms and conditions section to include further Facebook integration &#8211; including a requirement that app users share data with the company.<\/p>\n<p>In an in-app message sent to users this week, WhatsApp said that the changes will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Updates to WhatsApp&#8217;s service and how it processes your data;<\/li>\n<li>How businesses can use Facebook hosted services to store and manage their WhatsApp chats;<\/li>\n<li>How WhatsApp will partner with Facebook to offer integrations across Facebook Company products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WhatsApp said that these changes will officially come into effect from 8 February. After this date, any user which has not agreed to the new terms will no longer be able to use the messaging service.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2021\/01\/whatsapp-users-must-share-their-data-with-facebook-or-stop-using-the-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArsTechnica<\/a><\/strong> reports that some of the data that WhatsApp collects includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>User phone numbers;<\/li>\n<li>Other people\u2019s phone numbers stored in address books;<\/li>\n<li>Profile names;<\/li>\n<li>Profile pictures;<\/li>\n<li>Status message including when a user was last online;<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic data collected from app logs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under the new terms, Facebook reserves the right to share collected data with its family of companies.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014.
