South African mobile social network, Mxit<\/a>, has appointed Francois Swart<\/a> as its chief executive officer.<\/p>\n

Swart stepped into the role of acting CEO in October 2012 after former lead, Alan Knott-Craig Jnr<\/a>, stepped down citing a difference in strategy with the company\u2019s shareholders.<\/p>\n

Swart was previously the company chief financial officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrancois has been the de facto CEO for almost a year now and has the respect and trust of his management team, staff and the shareholders, said shareholder Paul Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“This comes from proactively leading and transforming the business to what it is today. Mxit is in a great position right now and this is in part due to the leadership he has displayed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an exciting time to be leading Mxit,\u201d said Swart. \u201cThe mobile landscape is a very dynamic and competitive space, much more so now than when Mxit first entered the market.”<\/p>\n

“What we have lacked in the past is a strong smart phone presence. But that is changing.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this month (September 2012), research conducted by\u00a0World Wide Worx<\/a> and Fuseware<\/a> revealed that\u00a0Mxit’s\u00a0user base\u00a0had grown to 7.4 million, up from 6.95 million in August 2012, using a 30-day metric.<\/p>\n

At the end of 2012, Mxit shifted its stat reporting from the number of active users over a 90-day period to a more industry-standard 30-day period.<\/p>\n

World Wide Worx noted that Mxit was starting to feel the effects of competing instant messaging services like WhatsApp<\/a> and 2Go<\/a>, as well as from the growth of social networking on phones.<\/p>\n
