{"id":465386,"date":"2021-02-04T08:21:49","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T06:21:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=465386"},"modified":"2021-02-04T08:21:49","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T06:21:49","slug":"south-african-companies-to-help-fund-facilitate-vaccine-rollout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/465386\/south-african-companies-to-help-fund-facilitate-vaccine-rollout\/","title":{"rendered":"South African companies to help fund, facilitate vaccine rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s biggest companies are in talks with government to help finance and facilitate the rollout of coronavirus vaccines in a program they estimate will cost R12 billion ($802 million), an alliance of the country\u2019s largest business organisations said.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are being drafted to help with logistics and funding and talks are being held with the National Treasury and Department of Health to surmount any obstacles and bring \u201cprivate-sector finance to the party,\u201d said Martin Kingston, chairman of the steering committee at B4SA, or Business For South Africa, said in a briefing Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa faces the unprecedented challenge of vaccinating her people,\u201d Kingston said in a separate statement. \u201cWe have therefore resolved to reshape B4SA to have a singular focus &#8211; supporting the national vaccine program under the leadership of the national government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bid by business to aid the government comes after criticism from scientists, labor unions and opposition parties that no direct deals with drugmakers were concluded in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, the government has announced several supply deals and some vaccinations are expected to begin this month.
