{"id":466334,"date":"2021-02-09T15:44:31","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T13:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=466334"},"modified":"2021-02-09T15:44:31","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T13:44:31","slug":"heres-how-much-money-developers-earn-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/it-services\/466334\/heres-how-much-money-developers-earn-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how much money developers earn in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OfferZen has published its 2021 &#8216;State of the Developer Nation&#8217; report, one of South Africa\u2019s largest data reports on developer careers.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a survey of over 3,500 local developers, the report found that developers are most keen to work with the Python programming language.<\/p>\n<p>Python is one of the prominent languages used for machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). 38% of total responses indicates that Python is the language most local developers want to work with this year.<\/p>\n<p>The most exciting industry in 2021 is AI\/cloud technology followed by FinTech and cybersecurity, OfferZen said.<\/p>\n<p>Developers in cloud-based engineering also feel most confident about their career growth compared to any other industry, another indicator of this up and coming sector.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-466342 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages-1024x749.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages-1024x749.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages-768x562.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages-1200x878.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Languages.jpg 1297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Developers are, by the very nature of their work, at the cutting edge of technology and they\u2019re telling us that ML and AI are not going to be on the edge for very long,&#8221; said Stephen van der Heijden, vice president of Growth at OfferZen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s going to be right in the middle of what we do and what we build \u2013 even more so than they already are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JavaScript remains the most used language by SA developers \u2013 62% of responses indicate it is the most used language by local developers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes this super interesting is that we also asked developers to rate what they think are the most promising industries. When you see the results, it\u2019s pretty clear that our industry is shifting to the data, cloud computing and AI world, and it\u2019s doing so fast,\u201d van der Heijden said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salaries\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to salaries, the survey found that developers in the FinTech and cloud technology industries earn the highest salaries.<\/p>\n<p>Junior developers earn between R23,000 and R35,000 per month in FinTech, while those in cloud-based engineering earn between R27,000 and R33,000.<\/p>\n<p>Intermediate developers with 4+ years experience earn between R45,000 and R58,000 in FinTech, and between R44,000 and R60,000 in cloud-based engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Developers with niche coding languages, such as Go and Ruby, can command higher salaries.
