{"id":468906,"date":"2021-02-17T14:55:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T12:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=468906"},"modified":"2021-02-17T14:55:03","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T12:55:03","slug":"rising-energy-prices-could-lead-to-rate-hikes-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/468906\/rising-energy-prices-could-lead-to-rate-hikes-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising energy prices could lead to rate hikes in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rising energy prices are fueling inflation expectations in South Africa, prompting traders to bet that rate increases are on the cards this year even as the economy remains in the doldrums.<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude oil, which determines South African gasoline prices, climbed to the highest since May 2019 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Together with an expected increase in\u00a0electricity tariffs, that\u2019s pushed\u00a0<span id=\"8dfdf978-7112-11eb-8556-308d99725830\">breakeven<\/span> rates &#8211; seen as a gauge of bond traders\u2019 outlook for price rises &#8211; to the highest since April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The South African Reserve Bank has cut its policy rate five times since the beginning of last year to a record low to support an economy that contracted the most in nine decades last year.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank\u2019s quarterly projection model implies increases of 25 basis points in the second and third quarter of 2021. Still, policymakers emphasized last month that decisions would be data-dependent.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Inflation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-468910 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Inflation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Inflation.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Inflation-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Inflation-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-tout-type=\"story\"><strong>South African inflation quickens first time in three months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Price pressures, together with rising US Treasury yields, may force the central bank\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Forward-rate agreements are now pricing in 46 basis points of tightening this year, a turnaround from the beginning of the month when expectations were for the repo rate to remain unchanged at 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Bond yields also suggest traders are positioning for rate hikes, with the curve bear-steepening as short-end yields rise faster than longer-term ones.<\/p>\n<p>Yields on local-currency government bonds due February 2023 have climbed for 11 consecutive days, adding 18 basis points to trade at 4.82% as of 11h41 in Johannesburg Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the highest since July.
