{"id":46994,"date":"2013-10-02T10:10:15","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T08:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=46994"},"modified":"2013-10-02T11:41:25","modified_gmt":"2013-10-02T09:41:25","slug":"people-want-e-tolls-transport-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/46994\/people-want-e-tolls-transport-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"People want e-tolls: Transport Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Transport Minister, <a title=\"Dipuo Peters\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/10177-Dipuo-Peters\">Dipuo Peters<\/a> says that only a \u201cfew\u201d people are against the implementation of e-tolls in Gauteng, with the majority in favour of having \u201cworld class roads\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on radio station, <a title=\"http:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\/safm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\/safm\" target=\"_blank\">AM Live<\/a>, Peters said that she expected implantation of the e-tolling project to commence within a month.<\/p>\n<p>President <a title=\"Jacob Zuma\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2611-Jacob-Zuma\">Jacob Zuma<\/a> recently signed into law the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill, which paves the way for the implementation of e-tolling.<\/p>\n<p>When asked why government was moving ahead with a project that was unpopular with motorists, the minister said: \u201cI don\u2019t know whether we can say it is unpopular with motorists, because people of South Africa want good quality roads, they want to be able to get to their destinations in the shortest possible time, and that doesn\u2019t come easy\u2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would want to say that it is a few number of people who have spoken out and have gone to court, but the majority of citizens are law abiding citizens who want these world class roads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the matter of having a fuel levy to pay for the roads, Minister Peters said it was unfair for people in Gauteng to expect people from around the country to pay for roads in Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we are saying, it is important that the user, the one who uses that particular road\u2026must be the one who pays for it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would want to say that right now we have got more than 600,000 people who have registered in Gauteng\u2026.people always want to stand back and say let\u2019s see what happens,\u201d \u00a0Peters said.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (<a title=\"Outa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1949-OUTA-Opposition-to-Urban-Tolling-Alliance\">Outa<\/a>), is currently awaiting the outcome of the Supreme Court of Appeal\u2019s (SCA) ruling on its appeal against e-tolling.<\/p>\n<p>Outa is a group of business associations and individuals, and was formed in March 2012 to challenge Sanral\u2019s decision to implement e-tolling of Gauteng\u2019s recently upgraded freeway network.
