A little more than six months\u00a0after its app’s launch, financial services group Absa says that more than 200,000 business and individual customers are using the banking application for smartphones and tablet devices.<\/p>\n

Launched in mid-April,\u00a0Absa said in July, that its app had achieved\u00a0133,000 downloads.<\/p>\n

By contrast,\u00a0FNB anticipated that it would reach 600,000 active users by the end of September, having launched the product in July 2011.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Absa said it has also added a “first-to-market feature” on its app with the ability to assign profile images for beneficiaries.<\/p>\n

The bank also revealed a\u00a0number of unique and improved features to its app that enhance the customer experience, including the ability to add and make a once-off bill payment; improvements to the CashSend service on the app; and the ability to make an immediate interbank payment to a beneficiary.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 200,000 business and individual customers are already enjoying the speed and convenience offered by the App,\u201d said Arrie Rautenbach, head of retail banking at Absa.\u00a0 \u201cOur customers will find that the improvements will make their lives much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rautenbach said that the\u00a0Cash Send service remains popular\u00a0with more than R1 billion in payments made in 2012.<\/p>\n

“By giving customers the ability to resend the withdrawal SMS to the recipient as well as the ability to change the customer-selected access code, CashSend via the App has become a lot more intuitive and convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n

The App is available for tablet computers and smartphones running Android or Apple\u2019s iOS as well as the most common BlackBerry devices including the new Z10.<\/p>\n

In reporting its\u00a0reporting interim results for the period June 2013, Absa said that Internet banking customers grew to 1.203 million, from 1.176 million in 2012, and from 150,000 in 2009, while mobile phone banking customers improved to 4.483 million, from 4.237 million before.<\/p>\n

Barclays Africa Group is 62.3% owned by Barclays Bank. It\u00a0was formed through combining Absa Group Limited and Barclays\u2019 African operations in July.<\/p>\n
