{"id":472820,"date":"2021-03-04T07:53:25","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T05:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=472820"},"modified":"2021-03-04T07:59:41","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T05:59:41","slug":"whatsapp-cannot-share-south-african-users-contact-information-says-regulator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/472820\/whatsapp-cannot-share-south-african-users-contact-information-says-regulator\/","title":{"rendered":"WhatsApp cannot share South African users&#8217; contact information, says regulator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s Information Regulator (IR) says that Facebook cannot share any contact information it collects from WhatsApp users in South Africa without first obtaining authorisation.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after a January update in which WhatsApp informed users it was preparing a new privacy policy, under which it could share some data, including location and phone numbers, with Facebook, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-safrica-facebook-whatsapp\/south-africas-information-regulator-says-whatsapp-cannot-share-users-contact-information-idUSKBN2AV2KF?il=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> <\/strong>reported.<\/p>\n<p>The IR said it has concerns about Facebook\u2019s new privacy policy which forces WhatsApp users to accept the policy by 15 May or face losing functionality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;WhatsApp cannot without obtaining prior authorisation from the IR process any contact information of its users for a purpose other than the one for which the number was specifically intended at collection, with the aim of linking that information jointly with information processed by other Facebook companies,&#8221; the regulator said in a statement on Wednesday (3 March).<\/p>\n<p>It said that this is in line with the existing Protection of Personal Information Act rules.\u00a0 The regulator has also written to Facebook South Africa and outlined its concerns about the company\u2019s privacy policy.<\/p>\n<p>Chairperson of the IR Pansy Tlakula said that the regulator is particularly concerned that citizens of the European Union will receive significantly higher privacy protection than people in South Africa and Africa generally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur legislation is very similar to that of the EU. It was based on that model deliberately, as it provides a significantly better model for the protection of personal information than that in other jurisdictions,\u201d Chairperson of the IR Pansy Tlakula said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not understand why Facebook has adopted this differentiation between Europe and Africa,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned changes still going ahead\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In February, WhatsApp indicated it will go ahead with its planned privacy policy changes, after listening to global backlash to the privacy policy update notification issued earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.whatsapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>published on its website, WhatsApp said that it had previously encountered a \u2018great deal of misinformation\u2019 about this update and said it will \u2018continue to work hard\u2019 to clear up any confusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a reminder, we\u2019re building new ways to chat or shop\u00a0with a business on WhatsApp that are entirely optional. Personal messages will always be end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp can\u2019t read or listen to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve reflected on what we could have done better here.
